New wooden front door recommendations

Postby balhamory » Mon Feb 04, 2013 10:26 pm

Hi, we live in a Victorian terraced house and need to replace our front door. We're looking for a victorian-style wooden front door and frame and would like suggestions for anyone who offers good quality and value.
Thanks!

Hello,

I can just offer a cautionary warning. Don't be tempted to use Door World on Battersea Park Road, they mis-sold us a soft wood door that should be hard wood and the installation was inept. Unfortunately the list goes on.

Makes me wonder if you get what you pay for with London Door Co.?

My neighbour used London Door Co. - I don't know how much they paid but it looks fantastic. I'm a little jealous.

That's intresting about Door World - I need some internal doors and was thinking of using them. I am not prepared to pay London Door Company prices for internal doors. I did use them for my front door - it's very nice indeed but I do think their prices are insane.

Wooden front doors are an ideal and interesting choice for enhancing the look and feel of your home. Whether you are faced with extreme heat, freezing cold, or a combination of the two, having a door made out of wood will go a long way towards keeping your entryway temperate and comfortable. Similarly, a wooden door also acts as an efficient noise barrier.

We used Dawes for Doors. Family company, good advice and excellent fitting. Cheaper than the London Door Co.

One of my best friends had her new front door (and sash windows) made by Ayrton Bespoke, who I think are in Merton Road. I'm seriously jealous!

MTM Herman (www.mtm-herman-joinery.co.uk) have recently made some new windows for us and we're hoping to get a new front door from them later in the year. They were recommended to us and we're delighted with their work so far.
We had a quote from the London Door Company last year and it was quite a bit more than MTM.

If you give them a call speak to Mirek. I seem to be recommending them to everyone at the moment!

We used F&E Joinery based in Herne Hill. They made a bespoke door as well and refitting and double glazing our stain glass fan light. It looks fantastic and was very competitively priced. We chose some Farrow and Ball paint to finish and bought the door furniture separately from SDS on the Northcote Road.

Good luck!

How much would I have to pay for a decent wooden front door? Ours is looking tired and I'm in the process of doing up the house. I don't really have a budget for it, but don't really know what the average is? (We're in a 1950s ex-council house)

It really depends on size, style, density of wood and whether there are glass panels etc. it is definitely worth getting a few quotes. From memory F&E Joinery were half the price of the London Door Company but I am sorry, I cannot remember how much our door cost!

we got quotes from Ayrton and The London Door co for a garden door - the London Door Co were great. Ayrton told us the door we wanted couldn't be made as it would be too big and heavy (suggesting 2 smaller doors instead which we didn't want). However, the London Door Company made one large door no problem and we are very happy with it. I would def. recommend London Door Co - no idea why Ayrton were making such a fuss about our door design and saying it wasn't possible to do when it could be done

The reason for the 'fuss'

Postby AyrtonWindows » Thu May 01, 2014 6:12 pm

To put the record straight ‘the fuss’ would have been about a concern on timber potentially warping and becoming unstable on a door width over a metre …these doors are incredibly heavy and aside from the hinge strain we would not be able to offer our normal 10 year warranties, hence the compromise solution. Maybe that’s why the London Door Company only offer a one year guarantee? Our advice sometimes doesn't meet a clients expectation but we have to be confident on what we guarantee. Best regards, the Ayrton team

Dear Ayrton

You are a well respected company with loads of great reviews on this website. I would definitely consider your company for any window replacements we might do in the future.

but - to respond to you - we do have a 10 year guarantee from the London Door Co so I think my point still stands.

And BTW - It's probably not very fair to second guess what guarantees another company have given us and then post that as 'fact' ....

For a door (which is what the post is about) my recommendation would be the LDC. They were the better company for us to use.

There are many other users of this website who highly recommend Ayrton so don't get too worried or defensive if you don't always get glowing reviews :-))

Hi Sonny,

I have to say that I can't disagree with anything that you've written. Yes you're right a bit defensive, but founded in a desire to do the right thing for each customer.

Apologies if it didn't come across that way.

Glad that you are sorted and great to see with another local company too!

Will take a breath before I press 'submit' next time.

Have a good weekend,

Robert
