Any fittness tips for a flat tum

Postby AnnieH » Fri Jul 19, 2013 1:23 pm

Can anyone recommend any ways that a busy working mum can tone up her tummy and lose the flab?

I don't need to lose weight and i'm no good at starving myself but I really want to not be so self-conscious of my tummy.

I have minimal time for exercise and have to juggle nursery pick ups and working in the evenings so I don't have much time for this, but any advice would be v gratefully received.

Hi there,

There are lots of things you can do that don't take up much time.
Im a personal trainer and give lots of my clients quick home workouts to do while their baby is asleep or otherwise occupied and you have a little bit of time to yourself but can't leave the house.

Here is a workout to get you going and give you an idea of the type of thing to do...

5 walkouts (touch your toes, walk your hands out until youre in a plank shape, then back up again)
10 squats
10 alternating leg lunges
10 crunches (feet on the floor, head in hands, look up and tuck your chin into your chest, hold for 3 seconds and then release slowly)
10 legs up crunches (exactly the same process as the previous exercise but keep the legs lifted off the floor this time)
20 V Sit twists (sitting up, lean back with heels lightly on the floor and slowly twist placing both hands on the floor either side of you)

Try to do this 3-5 times all the way through and you should feel like your stomach (and the rest of your body) has worked hard!

Try to do this as often as you can throughout the week and you should start to notice a difference. Don't rush the stomach exercises, the slower the better!! ;)

Good Luck,
Charlie Launder

Post babies, I made a conscious effort to always maintain good posture, and tense my core muscles (around my abdomen) as often as I could e.g when pushing the buggy, at the supermarket, whilst making dinner, all the time really. It was a huge effort at first as I didn't feel I had anything to tense but it soon became second nature.

Now after 2 kids I do have pretty good abs and I've not done anything else so it must have had an impact and it was totally manageable.

If its just your tummy your concerned about, you could try that?

Hula hooping twice a day for 5 mins a time (£14.99 from Argos for a weighted pro hula hoop) and yoga. This is what I'm doing and makes so much difference to my mummy tummy! Oh, and a esbelt impiana corset is great for losing inches and correcting bad posture.

Hello Annie - it sounds like there are two areas you would like to address here; the flatness of your tummy, and how self-conscious you feel around it.

I don't think there is any one set of exercises, diet plan, or formula that you need to follow.

Rather, I would suggest the key is helping yourself to understand your mindset, eating habits and exercise. In my experience, lasting physical change and increased peace with our bodies is only achieved by addressing all 3 factors.

We at Brighta run group programmes to help people address exactly these issues. We incorporate a proven weight loss course, group exercise and applied psychology to help people make lasting change to their eating habits, fitness and self-image.

If you would like to know more, please email me at duncan@brighta.co.uk.

Thanks,
Duncan
