Wow Supergirl, you had quite the Heidi childhood. I completely agree that other cars work just as well in the alps, I spent a lot of my childhood in the alps as well, and we didn't have a 4x4. I am just saying that even though I am not a huge fan of 4x4 and find the majority of them not used to their full potential as proper 4x4's, there are some of us who do due to our extensive hobbies outside of London. We live in London due to work, but are hardly here at weekends - this is the first one since before Easter!

Hi kewty...if you are feeding to me am sadly not an Eco worrior....wish I had more time to be one !!

But I like to think about these things when I am in a traffic jam on Battersea Rise and see all the children breathing in the delicious car fumes. So yes, when we changed car in my little small tiny insignificant way I thought I would choose a slightly more ecological car....it's your children too breathing in the fumes of "the blond" looking good in her 4x4. And have plenty of friends with range rovers that use them every day just to drop their kids to school and then go from Clapham to the Harbor Club ....and believe me their cars have never seen mud !!

The Discovery is THE worst car for CO2 emissions....have a look but believe its more than 350 g/km.

Sorry if I sound a bit of an Eco pain in the butt (and promise am generally a pretty relaxed person) but I feel very strongly about this....as you can probably tell!!!

A pedestrian hit by a large 4x4 is more than twice as likely to be killed than if they were hit by a normal sized car.

The point of impact on the body is higher if hit by a 4x4, meaning it is more likely to cause head and chest injuries, rather than leg and lower body injuries. This particularly applies to collisions involving children, due to the height of their head and chest.

A recent study by Transport Research Laboratory (TRL), shows many crashes now involve a collision between a large car and a small one. In such a crash the person in the smaller car is 12 times more likely to be killed than the person in the 4x4 [6]. The study also shows the rise in sales of 4x4s and people carriers is causing more than 20 extra deaths and serious injuries a year among people in small cars when the two are in collision [7]. Research has shown that a car driver is around four times more likely to be killed if hit from the side by a large 4x4 than by a normal sized car [8].

Person who thinks their blond wife looks good in a 4×4, is there a "little" problem you might like to share with us?!

I think I have come across the driver mentioned in the OP on Westover Road & I too am sick of almost being mown down by mummies driving 4 x 4 whilst talking on their mobiles & trying to turn left or right as well.

Oh & as we are all having a bit of a rant, to all the cylists who ignore the red light on East Hill & cycle ignoring all the parents crossing the road on their green light with little ones on scooters, walking or with pushchairs!!!

RED LIGHTS APPLY TO CYCLISTS & PAVEMENTS AREN'T FOR CYCLISTS!!!!

Rant over :)

I love my 4x4! I am also blond (a little help needed from my hairdresser from time to time), sadly I am not as thin as I used to be, but my personal trainer keeps me in shape. Can't remember what other stereotype I am meant to be fulfilling, but I will work on it!

Ps I am a very careful driver and considerate to other road users, in fact since owning a 4 x 4 I drive much more slowly and carefully. I also get very frustrated with bad and selfish drivers in our area, and I can assure you they are not all driving 4x4's!

Hellokitty, you think you're in trouble! I have a big 4x4 and I'm a cyclist but unless grey is the new blonde then that's it ;)

First of all, brilliant YouTube video, really summarises many of us on that forum, I would say :D

Second of all, they were three of us in my family and at the time, 4x4 didn't exist, yet our parents did manage to fit us in cars.

And in terms of safety, sure they are safer for your family when you are in the car, but are more dangerous for the people outside the car !

So let's not kid ourselves: driving 4x4 is like having the latest it bag. It's a fashion/status statement. In a few years' time, some other brand/type of car will be fashionable and their owners will try to find reasons to justify their purchase.

Best to assume and say : I have enough money to buy it and I like to flaunt it !

Once again I apologise for sounding like an ECO WARRIOR... I promise not to chain myself to your 4x4s at the weekend....

But Kitty - do you really never ever think about what your car is doing in terms of pollution as you are driving it around the NV streets ? I am just always amazed that this would not cross the mind of a mother with young children ? Young kids walking down Northcote Road are nicely at the same height of your 4x4 exhaust pipe !!!

Julian - you are kind of excused because you have a lot of rackets / equipment to carry around ... and because my children love your tennis lessons... and because you are not blond

SoConfused - thanks, I'd quite like to be blonde but hang on............maybe not :!:

I'm excused on the eco front because mine runs on LPG, in truth I couldn't afford to run it if it were petrol or diesel.
