The old Jamie Oliver place is going to be LLoyds Bank. The large Costa on that road has now closed. It's a big space, so hopefully it will be filled soon.

Would be nice to have a proper gym like virgin/ equinox close to Northcote versus walking down to the junction or old town.

A few weekends ago, we discovered Bayley Sage in Wimbledon. I would love for one of their branches to open here or if not them, something similar, ie a deli shop with great produce and cooked meals.

I could finally find the delicious Muscat grape that we have in Franc in autumn and is impossible to find here, unless you're willing to pay £15 a kilo for it at Selfridges! They have,a deli section with ready-made meals, lots of fresh food. It's delicious.

Hate to pour water on an idea but we've had deli's before on NC and they all go under. Plenty of people say it's a great idea but not enough part with enough cash.

Jamie Oliver's to be a bank? Wow that is a surprise especially when they are trying to shift as many services online and mobile. Still better than an empty space.

I hate to say it but the sites on Northcote Rd are just far too expensive for independent businesses to survive and with too little footfall. I work for a small food company and we have been looking for a shop for 3 years. Our maximum budget for rent is 40k and time and time again we meet sites at 3 or 4 times this which later become estate agents. For now we remain trading at markets and building our wholesale business but when we do open our lovely shop it will be in an up and coming area in SE london and not anywhere locally sadly.

Bayley and Sage is more than a deli it is a grocer and what we call an epicerie fine in french. Absolutely not the same as Dandelion (which i didnt like).

And i agree with Petal, i have never understood how they could justify to close so early. At least the food shops. Walking past after a day at work, feeling like some cheese or else... Thatcwould generate a few trades.

Does anyone know what's due to come to all the empty shops? Holy Drinker, next to Iris, merino kids, dandelion? I might be missing some!

Good evening all,

There are a few empty shops but many of them more by design than by accident. The Holy Drinker has been bought by the restaurant group Made in Italy. Their fit-out has been interminably slow but mainly because they have installed a mezzanine floor. The old Printax site and also Harry & Mary's newsagent have been completely refurbished (Harry & Mary's completely demolished and rebuilt) to provide three flats above, and a commercial space on the ground floor which will be re-let in due course. Dandelion is going down the same route but the development hasn't started yet which is odd.

The old café opposite the library has new lessees but is still under fit-out, and there are a few empty shops which have yet to find new tenants (I think), namely Merino kids, Samba Swirl and Capsticks. The old Mayoral shop next to the Breadstall is still empty but I would have to say that unless it's a business that complements the queues at the Breadstall, it is unlikely to find a tenant anytime soon due to the fact that Seb's stall prevents the shop from having any actual street frontage.

As we have all seen in the past, Northcote Road is a constantly changing mosaic of shops and whilst there have been some very welcome recent additions, I for one would still like to see more independents. Failing that, it would be great to just have some more shops appropriate to the Northcote Road demographic. White Company or Pret - are you listening...???

What about the old chemist site that was supposed to be a Caspian inspired restaurant? And there's the cafe site up towards Cath Kitson?
