I was told that about 7% of women can faint after having the merena put in and I was one of them. It wasn't very pleasant. I was not expecting the whole experience to be as brutal as it was if I'm honest. And I'd given birth to two girls very close together just before having mine put in and I've opted for a third baby over a second coil!! I don't want to over dramatise it, as I think it is different for everyone, but I wish I'd known a bit more about it before I'd opted to have one put in. I won't be going for it again, but I have plenty of friends who found the insertion uncomfortable but are very happy with theirs and are onto their second without a second thought. Good luck!

I have had 2 fitted over 10 years and had no problems. As long as the Physician is competent it is slightly uncomfortable but not horrendous!

My first one was inserted at St Georges by a marvelous Doctor who had been doing the procedure for about 20 years and was highly thought of. The second one was at my Doctors and was done by a GP who specialised in gynecological procedures and advice.

Nothing to worry about in my opinion, and great not having periods any more!!!! Keep focused on that thought.

I had one put in a few months ago and didn't even feel it. It was similar to having a smeer. I did take Cuprofen painkillers just before I went as advised by the doctor.
Totally recommend getting one but it does sound like a small percentage of women can have bad experience so its a small gamble.

I too had one fitted in the last 6 months. I was told by my GP to take 2 Ibuprofen 1 hour before having it fitted because it could be uncomfortable and I was likely to have stomach cramps after 'like period pain'.

I found it very similar to a smear, with couple of cramps but had totally forgotten about it within an hour...but I am glad I was told to be prepared.

I have had 2 coils fitted. I found that it was similar to getting a smear, with light period pains after. A warm bath and a couple of ibuprofen did the trick for me.

Never found the experience horrendous, but the first time I had a coil fitted the doctor said I had tiny cervix which made the process last 45 minutes. However, like another post has mentioned if you have a competent doctor/nurse who knows what they are doing with coils, you will be fine.

I had one fitted in a few months after a traumatic birth and it was very difficult emotionally, however not 'unbearably' painful. Make sure that your GP is very competent and VERY patient and gentle, and expect to have some cramps and bleeding after.

I had one fitted and agree it was just like having a smear test - only a little uncomfortable and period like pains afterwards but nothing a restful afternoon at home didn't solve.

I had one put in about 4 months ago and the pain was like having contractions again - I would certainly recommend dosing up on painkillers beforehand! (I didn't...)

Hi - I had a copper coil fitted a few months ago which I would imagine is the same procedure as a mirena coil and it was fine. I had a very experienced doctor do it at the sexual health clinic at Balham Health Centre and it was no more uncomfortable than a smear, and the uncomfortable bit only lasted about a minute at the most.

I did take some painkillers beforehand and the doctor did apply some gel to numb the area a bit too. Hardly any pain afterwards.

However, I have had two vaginal births in less than 2 years so it could be that I didn't really feel much as I have a fanny like a welly boot top now......!
