Electric Breast Pump Recommendations Please

Postby Wuzzaleena » Fri Aug 26, 2011 8:37 am

Can anyone recommend an electric breast pump? I don't want to spend a fortune as it will just be for one feed a day so that hubby can give baby an evening feed. There are so many types/brands on the market I don't know where to begin. Any suggestions welcomed :D

The Medela breast pumps were recommended to me by some midwives and my NCT leader. They are expensive to buy, but I hired mine which was a much cheaper alternative. Its worth looking into, as its very quick and you can use it at the same time you are feeding your child from the other breast!!! Also hiring means you can try the product out and if its not for you, you can look into some other alternatives.

I have tried the avent hand pump too which also worked. It takes longer, and its a bit more effort having to pump away, but its cheaper.

I've had both the medela swing and medela mini electric. Both v good but the swing is much better than the mini electric. I bought when my mini electric gave up. I used quite a lot but mainly to build up stock in freezer for when I was out/for husband to feed (not daily though). Whatever you do, suggest you go for something electric rather than a hand pump.

Second Medela electric (the full version, not a mini). It makes a HUGE difference vs smaller versions or a hand pump even if you only need to pump for one feed a day. I bought mine as I would be pumping a lot when back to work, but a friend hired hers and only needed to buy the kit. If you are thiking of having more kids in the future, might be a worthwhile investment though.

Highly recommend Medela Swing. I've had mine for three years now and using it now with my second baby. It's more expensive then other ones but if you are planning more kids its a great investment.

I agree with the other posters. The medela Swing has been really good for me. I tried the Avent hand pump first and it was painful, although this may just have been personal experience and perhaps I should have kept going.
I used the Swing for all 3 of my babies - the parts are easy to buy on Amazon so each time I used it it was as good as new. You can also use batteries and it can be carried easily in your hand luggage if you are travelling...

Definitely the Medela Swing. I used mine for 12 months, sometimes three times a day in the early months to build up a milk supply to freeze. It stopped working though after that but I was very happy considering I used it every day. It's expensive but a great investment.

I'd also suggest the Medela. Sounds like the Swing may be your best economical bet but I'd also look at the In Style Advanced double (which I had and found to be fantastic). You can easily get one 2nd hand on ebay for about the same price as the Swing and as another said buy the 'connector' pieces new.

I have been using a borrowed lactaline duo for the last 6months. It has been brilliant - without it I would have stopped within the first 4 weeks (like 70% of my nct group). I ended up just expressing for a week due to infections with cracked nipples and found it is very quick and comfortable. Whatever you manufacture you choose get an electric pump. If your little one is on the way I would get it and read the instuctions before the baby is born - 4am is a common time to start needing to express. Same goes with sterlisers, bottles and formula.... Painful breasts, everyone crying - formula does have a place. Good luck - breastfeeding is a fantastic experience once it works, for some that is on day one, for others it's nearer 12 week.

Hi, I have an Avent ISIS iQ handheld electronic breast pump which is a couple of years old and which I've only ever used once. Couldn't tell you how it compares with others, suggest to google a couple of reviews. Will sell if of interest.

Agree go for an electric Medela - but would recommend as someone suggested going for the double. I really wish I had done this...I got the Medela swing and while it was great the double would have saved so much time and energy (I never had enough of either). With my next baby I will be selling my Medela swing and going for the double pump - either used or new.
when I considered this before the baby I thought it was too expensive... and totally regretted it.

I got a lactaline double pump after my Philips Avent broke down (quite a common problem I think)
find it easy to use - and so much better to have a double one.
It was much cheaper than the Medela ones - I have never used any of them so don't know how it compares but was quite happy with it
