curtain maker

Postby SFMC » Mon Sep 12, 2011 2:04 pm

we got a quote from John Lewis for black out pencil pleat curtains for my son's bay room window. The cost was over £500 excluding measuring and installing. This seems rather pricey for a baby's room! (even exluding fabric costs).
As we would be installing them ourselves anyway can anyone recommend a curtain maker?

Also can anyone recommend a place to get a nice fabric for a child's room. The design at John Lewis we liked was £39 per square metre.

Thanks,

We have just had two sets of curtains made by an online company- took a risk but their online reviews were very good. They have extensive range of fabrics and get samples out quickly. Actually went for a cheaper fabric (£14 ish I think) as with cost of curtains generally just couldn't justify any more!

Anyway curtains are really well made, blackout lined with tie backs. We got four cushions made also, and couple of metres of Spare fabric. All for just over £600- was by far the cheapest way I found to do it. I would definitely recommend them!

Website is http://www.kidscurtaincompany.co.uk. They do have a more grown up site- some of fabrics duplicated. You can get online quote very easily if you have your measurements. Hope that helps (coming from someone who also found quote from john lewis shocking- couldn't even hide it from the woman who gave it to me!) good luck

For fabrics try 'Fabrics galore' on Wandsworth Road just before Queenstown Road. A great range of fabrics lots for £10-15 a metre. Black out material about £7 a metre. Terry's fabrics online are good too but I like to actually feel the material so I use Fabrics Galore.

I just bought some lovely material for my daughters room, luckily for me my sister is making then for me! :D

I had the same shock when I got quotes from local curtain shops... unbelievable. I was quoted 1200 for two curtains .... still in shock.

So now we are using Samantha Kirk, who lives locally and has been really amazing - she gave us lots of ideas and we're very happy with her work. You can reach her on 0779 631 5657 or email: sammiekirk@googlemail.com. I would highly recommend her. We also got most of our fabric from Fabrics Galore, they were good about ordering in colours that we wanted.

Hello, I am not sure if this will be of your interest, but if you can squeeze a bit of time you could always learn how to make them!. The Old School Club has a few courses, how to make a cushion, a curtain or a roman blind. You can chose how "difficult" you want the curtain to be, if this is above what is tought at the course, you can always come back to get more advice and to finish your project. We made beautiful curtains during the last course (lined, with pencil pleat) and the mums were very happy with their results. We also have a creche, so if you would like to bring your little one we can look after him/her. For more information you can visit www.theoldschoolclub.co.uk.

Fabrics Galore is a good local source. If you don't mind buying online, My Fabric House and Fabric Rehab have fantastic designs for children (at very reasonable prices).

Whatever you do, good luck with your curtains!
Regards,
Inma

Noticed quite a few people want to know of a curtain/blind maker. If I can be of any use please feel free to ask, i am only a email away, i do have a website tradecurtains.co.uk so no pressure just have a look and if you like what you see please contact me. can offer a fitting and measuring service as well. I can make up your own fabric or I can supply fabric.
