Weight training/lifting for midlife

Postby midlifemom » Thu Jan 04, 2024 12:17 pm

I'm interested in weight training at least once a week for better bone health as I head into midlife BUT don't know where to go.

I don't want to join a gym as I'd prefer guidance but I don't fancy personal training because of the cost/1:1 awkwardness. I did postnatal Crossfit a while ago which was fun, but for personal reasons, I would rather try a new location.

Can you recommend anywhere that's inside, not too expensive, tailored to woman in midlife close to Clapham South or Balham with classes in the day? Or am I asking for too much? TIA.

Recommend looking up Beatitude - southern end of Earlsfield, friendly, affordable and lots of guidance. I’ve moved away and miss the community and classes a lot!

Train Station is good but not cheap. Also too many burpees for me!
There is a new gyn called fitness works on Balham Hill . Don't have experience of it but might be worth checking out.

Thanks for your reply, I’ll check it out. I had a look at Train Station but it seems quite HIIT heavy and that’s not what I’m after. I’ve heard good things about Beattitude too but it’s just that little bit too far for me.

You can just join Fitness First - Balham and attend group classes - Bodypump, Pilates, Spin. Most of the participants are middle-age ladies...

Not such a fan of those classes. Once bitten and all that. Thanks for taking the time to reply.

The AMAZING Jane Wake offers a weight training programme called ‘The Strong Sisterhood’ with classes in Balham.

She is hugely experienced, motivating and knowledgeable and I would highly recommend her approach

She also does amazing pilates classes that combine a lot more strength and weights than a typical class

This site won’t let me post a link but Google ‘Jane wake strong sisterhood’ and it will take you to her website

Hi, Fit to Last private studio in Clapham have small group personal training with maximum of 4 members per group. The sessions involve lots of weight training. Members age are mainly age 35+. Worth getting getting in touch to find out if could be what you’re looking for.

Four Sides on Northcote road is exactly what you’re looking for! They’re all physios who take the sessions so they can keep an eye on any issues and it’s very female focussed. Highly recommend
