Good resort for late Easter skiing? Post Reply

Looking forward to 2025 we were thinking of organising a friends and families skiing holiday, but looking at the calendar, Easter is very late, 20th April!! and as that's when school holidays will fall, it will mean that we will be heading out either the second or third week of April. 

Question to any seasoned skiers, is there anywhere that you could recommend that might still be open and have a good snow or would you suggest leaving it for another year?

The last few years have been pretty hit and miss with most resorts. our current favourite (Courmayeur) has had a pretty rough time for the last couple of years, but had a cracking season this year.  As a general rule of thumb I would say to just go as high as you can - Tignes/Val Thorens in France, Cervinia in Italy, Zermatt in Switzerland, Lech or Sölden in Autria should give you some ideas of where to start.

Val Thorens would be the recommendation from me too. Highest resort in Europe. We have skied there late season, 2nd week April a couple of times but not for a couple of years and it has been fabulous but It is all so hit and miss now. You just never now what you are going to get. Not sure where skiing is headed long term. Alternatively, pick a resort that has a glacier becuase that will be high athough icy, just check how long it takes to get to it.

Literally everywhere in the Alps and Scandinavia is having amazing snow conditions right now.  Only the Balkans have missed out.  If you're really geeky about weather/snow conditions, research what El Nino seasons are like.  It's absolutely not 100% reliable but it is a useful guide to what to expect.  For reference this has been the changeover season from La Nina to El Nino systems, so in theory next winter should be the first El Nino season in this pattern.

As for resorts then yes, the ones already mentioned will work as good as any.  If you want something more adventurous, you could try some of the Scandinavian resorts like Levi or Riksgransen.

If you are planning for skiing in late April, then it is better to consider higher altitude resorts or places that offer glacier skiing. Locations such as Zermatt in Switzerland and Tignes from France usually maintain good snow conditions during later part of the season. You could also look at resorts in North America like Whistler Blackcomb (Canada) or Mammoth Mountain (California). These often have extended seasons because they are high up and can produce their own snow.

We just had a week in Val d’Isere a week ago and it was excellent, majority of the week was better days with blue sky and snow. In laws live there and have also had decent conditions this week.

I’d go with the other comments here, high resort to guarantee decent snow and keep in mind it’s best to get out early because once the spring sun comes up the slopes deteriorate. Saying that we found a great slope out of the sun so managed some post lunch skiing too, or just have a later lunch and make the most of it …
