Nanny advice urgently needed, please!

Postby Loopedoo » Wed Feb 22, 2012 8:19 pm

Hello all you mums and nannies out there,

My husband, myself and our 19month old little boy are about to move to Stormont Road in Clapham and we hope to be in the new house by mid March. The problem is we are both free-lance opera singers and are returning to full-time work from April 2nd, each of us working for a different opera company, which makes timetables even more complicated!

We have never had a nanny before, so have no idea what the cost involved is, what the expected working hours are, etc. We are looking for a full-time nanny for 6 weeks from the start of April, as my mum-in-law will take over after that. I wanted to ask you all whether such a short-term contract is even possible, where the best place to find a reliable and responsible nanny is (apart from on this website!) and how we should go about it all.

Any advice please?

Thanks,
Lucie

Hi,
I run a nanny agency and would be happy offer any advice that you need.

Nannies will work on short-term temporary positions. Nannies are usually employed rather than self-employed. There are nanny payroll companies that will help you organise the nannies tax and NI.
Depending on what sort of nanny you are looking for will depend on the cost. They can cost anything from £8-12 NET per hour depending on their experience and qualifications.

The good thing about employing a nanny is that you can tailor it to your needs rather than having to work out maximum hours (like an au pair).
Nannies can work any number Of hours. Most will do 10-12 hours per day and babysit during the week too. The best thing to do will be to work out the hours you need and advertise that.

As for where to look, the free website like this one and **** are good. Gumtree will always bring in a large number of applicants but they don't always listen to the advert so you may get some nannies apply that won't fit with what you are looking for.

Agencies are good because they will do most of the more for you. It is also free to register and advertise the position through agencies. Fees only apply if you choose to employ one of the nannies that they have introduced to you.

If you'd like any more advice then please feel free to give me a call.

Welcome to the area!! Also try Wimbledon nannies - Claire she is brilliant and looks after you very well.
Like said above nannies work 10/11 hours a day at around £10-£11 p/h, also helping around the house to help you.
If you need any more advice on activities I'm looking after a little girl 20 months in the area. Good luck

Abbeville nannies are great.
The two women who run it is called Kate and Katherine. They're both mothers and are always on the ball with all your requirements.

Hi,

I work for Like Minders www.likeminders.co.uk and we specialise in ad hoc childcare and can certainly help you, in fact this is exactly what we do and we have many clients who love our flexibility with their unusual working hours, like actresses/air stewards etc. We provide babysitting and ad hoc daytime childcare throughout London. We use the very best CRB checked childcarers, all of whom are over 21 years old and have to pass our very strict selection process to ensure that our standards remain very high. We can find you temporary nannies, last minute daytime help and babysitting as and when you need it. Give us a call if you have any queries 0844 879 7189 www.likeminders.co.uk.
Best wishes, Georgie
Lovely nannies and babysitters

nappy valley nannies is a great agency, very friendly and committed to putting the right person with the right family. I am a nanny and they were great from a nanny poitn of view and i know of many parents who have used them and found them to be great from a mum/dad point of view also. Run by Amanda who had been a nanny for many years herself and now a mum so who better to help you find what u need :)
