Best place to stay in Devon?

Postby Almaceti » Fri Mar 09, 2012 10:50 am

Hi I am planning short holidays in Devon and I have found several nice cottages /apartments, but now I just don't know which one to choose. Which place would you recommend between Salcombe, Brixham, Dartmouth or is it even better to stay in the countryside about 5 miles away and drive to the beach?
Basically we would prefer a quiet place with some space for the children, quick access to the beaches and to pubs/restaurants/shops but at the same time not in the very town centre.
Thanks for your advice

We had a lovely long weekend in Salcombe which has some beautiful beaches. We visited Dartmouth but there didn't seem to be any beaches within walking distance.
We stayed in an apartment through Salcome Holiday Homes which was great.

Just about to book our holiday in Salcombe ourselves. We have decided to stay in Salcombe this year as we want to try that and are using Salcombe Holiday homes www.salcombe.com but we normally stay in a fantastic place called Court Barton which is inbetween Marlborough and Thurlestone. It is a 2 minute drive from Thurlestone Beach (road is too windy and dangerous to walk). The place is fantastic. It is a converted farm with about 10 holiday cottages and appartments. It is all very safe and I recommend cottage number 6 as they have made it child friendly with stair gates etc. Some of the cottages have incredible sea views. There is a communal indoor pool, outdoor pool, tennis court and incredible open space. Also, a table tennis and pool room. My girls love it there and can't wait to go back. It is a five minute drive from Marlborough where there is a little garage and a co op and five mins from Hope Cove where there is a good pub and restaurant and a couple of small beaches. It is about 10 mins from Salcombe and 10 mins from Kingsbridge. To check it out go to http://www.toadhallcottages.co.uk/ and to see number 6 go to CB6 as a property reference and then you will see the other properties listed there at Court Barton. Have had fab holidays there and email me if you want any more advice when staying there as I can recommend things to do. daisy@janeplan.com. In a rush to go and pick up my girls so hope this makes sense. Daisy

We rent a cottage in a fantastic village called Dittisham just up river from Dartmouth. It is very pretty, a local river taxi into Dartmouth, a fantastic pub on the waterfront with a mustn't miss quiz on Thursday nights. Crabbing on the pontoon, which keeps ours and lots of other little ones occupied for hours. Sailing club for the older children. There are some fantastic beaches a short drive away, or to make a real day out, get the river taxi to dartmouth, then get the old steam train to Paignton where there is a good beach. We have been going for about 8 years and love it. Cottages can be rented through Dart Valley Cottages http://www.dartvalleycottages.co.uk/. I hope you have a fantastic holiday.

Dittisham is amazing, as is Dartmouth and Salcombe however!

If you do decide on Dittisham, there is a fantastic hotel but also has self catering accommodation - we had our wedding there and it is glorious!
