TK Maxx in Balham

Postby Ceecee1972 » Tue Apr 10, 2012 4:32 pm

Apologies if this topic has already been discussed (couldn't find a thread..) but I walked passed the building site on Balham High Rd today and spoke to one of the builders. It is definitely going to be a TK Maxx.
Beats Bon Marche I guess....

I'm quite surprised at these posts, my experience of TK Maxx (albeit in Kent) has been fantastic! The Maidstone store has a huge house and garden section (beautiful wool rug, RRP of £375 which I picked up for £80), Ralph Lauren towels and bedspreads at £15-30 and a really fab kids section. I would only ever go there for christening/new baby presents, lovely sets by grobag, and various french babywear designers... My nike pilates trousers were £12 a couple of weeks ago, instead of £40 in the sports store in Canary Wharf! At Xmas time I save hundreds of pounds getting decent presents for friends and family that I just could not afford full price were it not for TKs....I am personally thrilled to hear a store will be opening by my new home :) Please try to give it a chance, you might be surprised! x

I was speaking to someone at TK Maxx last summer and they said they wanted to turn it into an "upmarket" branch - like the one they apparantly have in the City. So less stuff and better laid out. Plan was a lot of womenswear and some homewear - plus I guess they'll have childrens too.

To be honest, I welcome any new clothes shop in Balham. Right now, most of my clothing comes from Oliver Bonas and I invariably have to text around the other mums to check they are not wearing the same top when we all head out! Seems half the mums in Balham have the black and white spotty top as a wardrobe staple. Definitely need some more choice.....

Thank you NewtoSouthside, my thoughts exactly! I think too many mums around here are needlessly snobbish about TKMaxx. With my 3rd child on the way and me having gone down to part time work, I love that with careful looking I can find some great deals on high quality clothes, shoes & homeware at a fraction of the price. It's always a little lift for me when I'm feeling like a frumpy mum to pop into a TK Maxx and find a nice cute top or dress for myself 'just because' without dropping all the ££ for the more upmarket shops. :D

What's wrong with TK Maxx?? I love a good bargain! :)
Also, I don't think there is anything suspicious about how they get there stock. It's essential stuff that has been over produced, never made it to the high street or never sold elsewhere - mixed in with some current season things. ie. no less ethical than the rest of the high street (which each can make their own mind up about). I think anyway, correct me if I'm wrong!

so some of the TK Maxx stores are grim. my nanny told me that it is a known fact that a lot of people go in and walk out in new shoes leaving their old ones in there!!!
I was a terrible shopping snob but have had some amazing purchases from TK Maxx for ma and my girls. Ralph Lauren dresses 16.99 from 70.00. converse at 15.00 instead of nearly 40.00 that youd pay on N Rd - cant argue with that!

This reminds me of when a 99p shop was going to be set up in Lymington in the New Forest where my mum lives. There was so much outcry the local paper got involved and there was a virtual campaign to keep it out.
Now a year on it is really succesful, I'm sorry but you go in there and find shampoos, baby stuff and God knows what else that you find at three times the price everywhere else.
Its added to the High Street instead of ruining it. TK Maxx is a godsend - I went to Disneyland Paris recently and the Princess dresses there are £69. In TK Maxx they are £25 at the most. I've also brought brilliant Kenneth Cox handbag and Betty Barclay laptop bags at third of price. This is all last season stuff, not bankrupt shops.
As for nicking new shoes, I have never seen that but I've brought my daughter a lot of new shoes and boots that I could afford there.
I am a single mum struggling - I certainly don't have the money to shop at Oliver Bonas. Another thing - I'm old enough to remember when Balham was rough as hell, in fact the bloke who wrote 'Only Fools and Horses' came from there and a lot of the characters are based on people he knew.
The fact that it has now become an enclave of Battersea, Clapham and other areas that have now priced people out of there doesn't mean that the original Balham people aren't still there and I imagine they are cheeing the fact that a TK Maxx is opening - if you don't like it get a bus to Sloane Square and shop at Peter Jones!!!

A lady that works in sainsburys told be it is going to be a wilkos today. Although by the looks of the roof (or lack of!) it's not going to be anything for a while!

To end the speculation, it's definitely going to be a TK Maxx. It's now on the company's website as a "new store" opening in October 2012 (although, by the look of the site, the builders are going to have to do a lot of work in the coming weeks!)

I love TK Max, the Clapham Junction one is a bit hit and miss, I often visit the swansea one when in wales, well i dont go specifically to go there lol, but again because its bigger it has a fab home and grden section.
