Pilates

Postby dannig17 » Fri Apr 13, 2012 3:10 pm

Hi everyone,

Has anyone tried pilates? I have been recommended to try it after suffering with some hip problems which my Doctor believes are related to weak stomach muscles after giving birth. Recommendations would be good and rough prices because I just went on one website where the average price was £55 per session.

I really recommend Pepilates, www.pepilates.co.uk they do a very reasonable introductory offer and either equipment or mat classes. Then I bought blocks of 10 classes which worked out about £28 a class of up to 3 people. Really great teachers, friendly and most importantly, the way the pilates is taught is first rate. (I have just moved away so sad I can't go anymore) I have been to 3 different studios and they are by far the best of the 3 I have tried.
I went for a similar reason, bad back after pregnancy and it has completely sorted me out! I find the work on the reformers much more effective for me than the mats but I would think it is good to try both.

Hi - I do it twice a week and thoroughly recommend it. Go to www.WVPilates.co.uk. Maja does classes behind the Polka Theatre in Wimbledon and in Wimbledon Village every week. She was born to do it. Her classes are very relaxed and the best bit is she only charges about £10/£12 per session depending on how many you buy up front. I cannot recommend her enough.

Hi there,

I do pilates through www.pilatespluswellness.com who run sessions in the daytime and evenings in Northcote Road, Clapham Common and Balham. It's £12 an hour with a 10% discount for block-booking. I have been doing a weekly class since January and am really enjoying it... it is mat-based, but you'll definitely come away feeling the benefit in your tummy muscles as there is a real emphasis on strengthening this area as well as using it to move other parts of your body.

I hope you find something that suits you: enjoy!

Without any doubt, one of the best teachers around is a lady called Jo Redfearn http://www.studiojo.com/
If you are lucky enough to get in to one of her classes you will never regret it. I don't know what she charges nowadays but her prices have always been the going rate. £55 sounds expensive unless it is one to one.
As you have a hip problem you would need to start off doing remedial Pilates so you need to choose a teacher with lots of remedial experience.
Length of time teaching doesn't necessarily equate to the best teacher or the right teacher for you.
Definitely contact Jo and if she can't fit you in, she should be able to refer you to someone decent. She has been teaching Pilates for years, she was one of the first teachers doing it over here I believe.
