Help needed re toddler car sickness please

Postby northside_mum » Sun Oct 28, 2012 10:35 pm

Hi,
Our two-year old daughter has been suffering from car sickness ever since she was a baby and it doesn't seem to improve. We have tried to plan our car trips at least an hour after meals so she is not always sick but she clearly feels very nauseous and cries a lot, which is heartbreaking. Of course the best thing for her is to be asleep but she sleeps less and less as she gets older. It is getting to the stage where she clearly does not want to get in the car anymore. She doesn't seem comfortable on buses and trains either so we are getting a bit restricted on travel options. We have tried homeopathic remedies but they don't seem to be helping much. It would be great to hear of any tips you might have found useful if you encountered similar issues.
Thanks very much in advance for your help.

I could be wrong but is this not what phenergan is for? It's worth looking into.. It's at most chemists. Not for everyday use but worth looking into.

It does make them drowsy... Hmm perhaps that's how it helps.

I used to get carsick as a kid. Got to the point I would feel sick before I got in the car... Not ideal.

Good luck

All of mine are car sick! Once they reach 3 you can use travel sickness pills (joy rides are the ones we use) - may be worth checking with your doc if your lo could take them before 3. Golden rule for us is no dairy before a car trip. You can also get childrens travel wrist bands from pharmacies (Boots def stock them). Hope this helps!

Poor you, we went through exactly the same with our daughter, now 4, who has finally grown out of it, fingers crossed. She used to get sick on a 10 minute car journey to nursery in the mornings, which was so stressful.
We tried the wrist bands for children, but she often took them off, most chemist remedies are not intended for children under 3. Window open is good, lots of air in the car. We just had to plan our long car journies around her sleep times, or take the bus/train (where she felt fine). Good luck!

I never found the tablets did anything

In car DVDs or playing on the iphone seems to prevent ours being ill

Antihistamine an hour before hand can also help allegedly

Hi,

My french grandmother had always tricks to cure stuff... we call it in french if i translate ' a gramma thing'. so for the car sickness, she says to put a newspaper ( not magazine !) between the babies bottom and his/her car seats...

That trick works for one of my cousin, she has 3 youngs car sickness children ( 4, 2 and half, 5 months), and they are not sick in car anymore...

it's worth the try !!! I hope that will help.

My DS also had the same problem on long car journeys, so we were always armed with bucket, cloths, wipes and a change of clothes etc....
until we discovered these:

Traveleeze Soft & Chewy Pastilles - 10 Pastilles
http://www.boots.com/en/Traveleeze-Soft ... les_17939/

They are suitable from the age of 2!

Worked a treat with DS.
On one occasion we did forget to give him it and he did throw up.....so they were clearly working otherwise!
They are the chewy type so he just thought it was a sweet any way so no probs taking it

We had the same trouble with my oldest. It's horrid.
I took him to see a cranio osteopath for a general check up. He had just turned 2 at the time. I didn't realised that as a result of just one treatment he would be cured of car sickness!!!
My son is now nearly 6 and I think he's maybe been car sick no more than twice since then.

We also use a combination of traveleeze (half a chewy tablet at this age) and travel bands for my 4 year old- seems to work well, also plain rice cakes to nibble on. Good luck!
