Appropriate present for cleaner

Postby MMmmm » Thu Nov 29, 2012 7:14 pm

I'm wondering what an appropriate gesture would be for our cleaner this xmas-- Money or Gift. If money, how much?

She's only been with us two months, comes once a week for 3 hours. She doesn't speak much english so i don't really know much about her which is sad.

Any thoughts/tips much appreciated!

I think the norm is to give a week's pay as a bonus. So if you pay her £10ph, then on her last shift before Christmas give her £60 as opposed to your usual £30.

I give the same - a free week plus i also give her a week off - which in effect means I pay her for 2 weeks so instead of £40, she gets £120 (if I just paid her and then gave her the week off she would be no better off if you see what I mean)

I too give 2 weeks pay as a bonus. She gets no holiday pay so I think this is fair.

I usually give a week's pay plus a small gift (around £20 in value). She seems to be genuinely happy with both.

Maybe I am going to sound like Scrooge but as she's only been with you for two months I think a week or two week's pay is quite generous. For a longstanding cleaner I would pay that but for someone who had been with me for two months I would probably pay half a week's pay or buy a small gift if I could think of something suitable.

I do not agree with you MgMidget by saying that a week or two is quite generous. If she pays her 30 pounds a week, then as a x mas gift for a week of pay, it would be 60 pounds for the cleaner.
I would want to keep my cleaner happy, a week of salary seems right at the moment. That's what I think.
