Is 195k enough to live in Wandsworth?

Postby clapset » Tue Mar 19, 2013 10:50 am

Hi everyone

CEO of Wandsworth Council here. I've asked my great pal and confident Clapset to start a blog for me on Nappy Valley and I thought I would start by asking - is the reported £195k I earn a year enough to sustain my lifestyle in Wandsworth?

I know it may seem crass but I've travelled well in my time having worked for Council's in Peterborough and Manchester but now I'm in Wandsworth I'm thinking is £195k enough? And what would Chelsea and Westminster Council offer me should I look to move North of the water?

Anyway, I can't hang around too long and will be blogging more but must dash as I have some more playgrounds and One O'Clock clubs to shut ... the biscuits don't pay for themselves you know!

Speak soon

CEO

Guys

This is no laughing matter. This is deadly serious stuff!

You don't understand how hard it is to run the council when working 9 - 5, four days a week.

Plus its not easy telling the residents of Wandsworth how it is the cheapest borough in the country to live in from a council tax perspective, whilst to maintain my lifestyle I have to stealthily increase lots of your cost such as parking and put businesses at risk of closing by increasing their rates and at the same time I have to shut down as many services as possible, tell you its good for you and not show you where all the money is actually going ... that's not easily and takes years of civil service training to do it with a straight face.

But rest assured I recently decided to make 2 senior directors redundant. They were on £100k a year and I thought is was unfair to expect them to live in SW11 on such a meagre wage so hopefully they will move to live somewhere like Carlise within their new means.

Anyway, I'm probably boring you with my problems and frankly I'm busy trying to organise a meeting of 65 councillors who need to decide whether on not we close meals on wheels for 12 elderly people, 65 is an awful lot of cups to wash and cakes to cut so it may take me a few hours.

Finally, if you have any suggestions on how I should run the council feel free to let me know. We have a user on Nappy Valley called Wandsworth Council (that was my idea) and they will collate your thoughts and file them in my in tray (which by the way is a see through plastic bag - it used to be orange but I wouldn't see whether the ideas were recyclable so they just ended up in the general waste).

The CEO

I'm out of ideas now - so will need to give it a week or 2 until WC annoy me with another tax, or service closure ... or may be I'm just jealous because to earn the sort of money the CEO does I have to sell my soul, work round the clock and deal with some pretty unpleasant people ... all while not seeing my new borne child who faces a life of no services, playgrounds or playgroup areas ...

I want a council house! 5 beds please with a garden overlooking Wandsworth common, can I also have free parking, free schooling and a bacon sandwich every morning with a cup of tea ... no, why because I work?!

Ok in that case can I have some services like ... bin collection where the bin ends up in the van and not on the street, roads without pot holes, children's services like the one o'clock club and a playground ... no! Why not? Because you spent all the money on yourself

To the tune of Sloop John B by the Beach Boys ...

"You steal from the rich, to give to the poor.
195k, you live next door!"

@clapset

Perhaps you could vent on my behalf at the child (that was old enough to know better) that was stamping on the crocuses planted by Wandsworth Council, funded by OUR council Tax & ripping them out in the old church yard opposite Southside last week whilst his father/brother/uncle/carer watched on, chain smoking & didn't utter a word to stop him.

There's no point they wouldn't know any different anyhow. The world is made of many types of people ... it's just some clearly don't deserve oxygen.

However, the good thing about crocuses (or is it croci) is that the bulbs cost very little and will self regenerate creating many more crocuses capable of being stamped on by many more people who have recreated other people that don't deserve oxygen but have some how found a way of filtering it out of Embassy Number One's. Hence meaning more services can be closed by WC to be replaced by crocus stamping outreach centres - net result £195k is probably cheap for such strategic thinking.

Cmon, guys...don't make this website a place where you are only venting.
If you have useful suggestions, by all means forward to the council.
Only bitching and no action will achieve nothing.

But I did!

I offered to run a redundancy program to sack all of them but they weren't interested.

Instead they put their hands in my wallet and lifted more cash - that I worked hard for. And frankly I resent that.

haha :D
Especially I'm enjoying the fact that council was so efficient and decided in March, ahead of proposed May discussion, to definitely close all one-clock clubs where I live.
I wonder how much it was costing to run Windmill club - which looks like a garden shed?! I bet it really does saves millions to the council!

TBH I would quite happily take a council tax increase if it meant preventing the one o clock clubs closing. CT in Wandsworth is peanuts. I don't mean that in a flippant way but it is very little and gives reasonable value for money.

As for the potholes and there are hundreds. I'm pretty sure that like every april - particularly the last two weeks they will be filled just before the end of the financial year.

Don't get me wrong though the CEO of Wandsworth getting £195k PA is a joke.
