These guys are in the centre of Balham. One of the mums at schools swears that it is the best exercise for keeping in shape that she has ever used. Anyone else found it works?

I started doing Bikram yoga following recommendations from a couple of friends (both independently of each other) and after seeing the new studio in Balham.

In a word - WOW - don't get me wrong, it's really challenging and hotter than you could ever imagine doing any form of exercise in but it's worth it. I always leave the 90-minute class feeling energised and healthier. Oh, and my skin is as smooth as a baby's bottom afterwards (it's really cleansing and gets rid of all your body's toxins) :P

I've become an addict in the four months I've been doing it and find the Balham studio really friendly (even if I'm greeted with the smell of feet upon entering  - you get used to this) and accommodating.

The studio offers a 10-day taster session for just £10 so that you can give Bikram a go and see if it's for you so it's definitely worth giving it a try if you're thinking about it.

We've just moved here from north London and my partner is opening a Bikram hot yoga studio on St Johns Hill, Sw11 1sy (next to the Plough) , in June. The website is bycj.co.uk

It's supposed to be an excellent way to loose weight, you supposedly burn as many calories as jogging for 90 mins, and it exercises the whole body- all organs, muscles and joints.

You can start the classes at any level of fitness and go at your own pace.

Good luck!

It's awesome! I used to do it when I lived in north london. I was skeptical at first as I'm not a yoga fan. I prefer higher intensity workouts however the heat combined with holding the various poses actually makes for a great cardiovascular workout as well. You feel pretty cleansed as well afterwards as you sweat so much.
If you're unfit then the poses have degrees of difficulty and you just don't hold them for so long but your fitness will increases pretty quickly.

Also interested here if coming to st john hill.

Fit-ish but unflexible. Tried yoga before but the teacher looked like a weird kind of guru talking about yoga retreats where you eat nithing and in a way i windered whether it was some sort of sect :? So that put me off.

But happy to change my mind! How long is the session and how hot is it (hotter or cooler than a sauna? Humid like a steam room?). How flexible do you need to be to start?

Thanks.

Maybe that's a different style of yoga you tried before, Bikram is quite straightforward, just the postures really. The session is 90 minutes long and the room is at 40 degrees (not sure what temperature a sauna is?) - it's less humid than a steam room. That's OK if you're not so flexible, everyone can do the postures to their own ability, your flexibility will improve rapidly and the heated room provides a safe environment for this. You'll be fine!

Really interested in the new Junction studio too!

I've done regular yoga for many years and hot classes at Yogahaven in Clapham Common http://yogahaven.co.uk/clapham/ which is a really lovely place. They're not a Bikram studio, they have their own more varied styles, including a hot flow class, which I really enjoy - I gather that Bikram is very static and is exactly the same script for every class.

Your first class will probably feel very intense, I felt nauseous in mine, the important thing is to stick with it and stay in the room, even if you just lie on your mat for the whole class the first time you go. In time, you just forget the heat, if you are focusing properly on the poses and your breath. You don't even notice the sweat rolling off your skin when you really get into it. It's lovely in the winter to spend 90 minutes at 40C!

Yes, different types of yoga suit different people. With Bikram the principle is to systematically work out every muscle, tendon, joint, ligament, organ and gland of the body, i think that's one of the things that's unique about it. But its best to try various styles and see what works for you.

So many people are put off by the fact of the temperature and not knowing how fit they need to be.

I started the classes spending most of my time laying down - simply getting use to the heat!
My advice is to stand at the back of the class and build up your resistance to the heat at your own pace.

You don't have to be a fitness freak to go to Bikram yoga - Just a good pair of leggings that stop at the knee and a tight fitting top that holds you all in!

Give it a go! - after 3 lessons you will start to love it!
