Worry

Postby anxiety » Mon Oct 06, 2014 10:45 am

I've changed my username as I'd like to keep private.

Over the last few months I have developed a real anxiety and worry over my health. I have children and I am just terrified of anything happening to me to the point where I can get excessive over my symptoms.

I worry all the time, feeling as if I am depressed over it and it's really affecting the way I am every day. I think my husband is also getting tired of it.

Am I the only one? Does anyone know of any support groups for this?

I'd really appreciate any advice.

Many thanks.

That sounds rough.
Have you spoken to your GP? They should be able to recommend someone to speak to. I think that most Mum's do go through stages of worry about either their own or their kids' health but seeking someone out sounds like a good idea if it's getting on top of you.
Hopefully someone with direct experience will be on soon.
Best of luck.

.... you are not alone - I have had exactly the same and really sympathise. I found my GP really helpful. Also recommend finding a counsellor, as it always helps to talk to someone professional, who is prepared to listen - your husband can't do it.

Many thanks for your responses.

I'm going to see a private gp as don't have a huge amount of faith in the NHS and booked to see a therapist.

Just wondered if anyone knew of any weekly support groups or came out of it the other side.

Hello,
I read your post. I would really recommend you take up some meditation, and breathing classes/exercises.

Restorative Yoga is also good for people who suffer from anxiety.

Hypnotherapy is also a good option to settle the mind and to focus on being in a blissfull state of consciousness.

You could try buying an essential oil (Rosemary Oil/Neals Yard) and keeping it in your handbag to smell when you feel it coming on
(Rosemary is great for grounding).

If you would like any personal contacts please do email me
lucyhs@hotmail.com

and i can put you in touch with some people.

If you can learn to focus on your breathing in the moment of when you feel the anxiety coming up it helps . Takes time and practise but it will in turn centre you.

All the best.

Namaste
Lucy

Hi
I am so sorry to hear about what you're going through. I used to obsess about my children's health and that something awful would happen to them, I know the feeling of anxiety. I found Reiki and that was amazing for helping to cope with and eventually alleviate these worries. The first principal of Reiki is 'Just for today do not worry'. You can learn Reiki in a weekend and have it for life, it is a practical tool for helping with anxiety and emotional and physical issues, you can also treat your children which is again practical to help them when they are hurt and wonderful for bonding.
Meditation and yoga are also I think invaluable.
If you would like the names of some recommended Reiki teachers then PM me.
All the best to you

Hi,

I am a therapist in private practice (counselling/psychotherapy) in SW12/SW17 and am happy to discuss any aspect of this with you if you want to message me.

All the ideas on here seem good possibilities for dealing with your anxieties. I agree that speaking to a therapist is a good idea if your symptoms persist. Your GP may be able to help (many are good, honestly!) though there might be a long wait for talking therapies. However, it sounds like you have made an appointment with someone so hopefully that will help you.

In terms of a support group I wonder if this site might be a good place to start one???

All the best

David

You are not alone, in fact I have been told by my GP that it is a really common problem especially after having children. I am trying a mindfulness course (mindfulness based stress reduction or MSBR), of which there are many on offer in London. But they are quite expensive. There are good self help books and audio guides on MSBR which are cheaper than doing a course. My GP also recommended a book called "Overcoming Health Anxiety" which is based on cognitive behavioural therapy. I hope you find something that works.

Hi there I went through exactly the same after my best friend died tragically 3 years ago. Please do PM me if you would like to talk. I promise you I came out the other side.

I'm really sorry to hear that you're going through that, but as many others in the conversation have said it's a very common and understandable difficulty. I am an NHS and private Clinical Psychologist specialising in health conditions and worries, so I work with the difficulties you describe on a daily basis and know how crippling they can be. It sounds like you've taken helpful steps in speaking with a GP and therapist. You might also want to look at mindfulness exercises (on youtube or similar) while you're waiting for this. My website has links about mindfulness therapy (which is one of those I deliver) at www.drbreen.co.uk. As I said, these difficulties are really common, particularly when people have young children and/or have experienced fertility issues. Best of luck with the therapy.
