Heavy Good Vehicles in Earlsfield - Petition

Postby Zjbgoodwin » Tue Jul 14, 2015 1:03 pm

Earlsfield residents petitioning for more equal balance of construction traffic to service the proposed Hazlemere development. Currently all construction vehicles will come in off Penwith Road, rather than from Merton Road, due to width restrictions. NOTE - this is NOT an objection to the development, just to balance out the traffic - should make the roads safer for the unaccompanied school children.

I agree that it is a real pain but I'm not sure what Wandsworth BC would be able to do about it if the traffic is headed to Merton? Merton council are hardly likely to want to encourage the HGV's to go onto their streets instead of Wandsworths and I'm not sure how WBC could force Merton BC to do something..

Are there some concrete suggestions of what WBC could do to improve the situation? Introduce width restrictions themselves? I think that this would make the petition more effective and I'd be interested to see them.

Totally agree re the litter. Fried chicken boxes are my personal bugbear...

We are wondering if they could remove width restriction in Merton to allow access from both ends.
We have tried to get width restriction in Wandsworth previously but was rejected due to economic climate and not restricting access to businesses. Now this is to be a residential site, this argument is now moot.
Alternative compromises could be time restrictions on access past the school.
Basically we need Wandsworth BC to consider their residents, as much as Merton BC does!

Thanks for the additional info. All I would say is that Merton aren't going to listen to anything that Wandsworth say about removing their width restrictions (Merton is Labour run and Wandsworth Tory run). Therefore, I think you will need to focus on measures that Wandsworth BC could take unilaterally.

Which development is this?

They might if Wandsworth put a width restriction in and the construction vehicles can't get to their new development! Haselmere Road

I couldn't agree more with some sort of control for Wandsworth residents. The development is entirely in Merton, traffic control needs to be fair through both boroughs and not just Wandsworth. If merton won't remove their width restrictions to share the burden then Wandsworth should prevent development traffic on it's roads making its residents lives a misery.
Too much NIMBYism here. Development is good for everyone.....The burden should be shared by all.

Its simply being fair, considerate, decent and reasonable.
No one wants the upheaval of HGVs and development - but it beggars belief that Merton are able to block their roads for a development in their borough and force Wandsworth Residents to deal all the upheaval.
Come on Wandsworth and Merton. Play fair and respect your residents.

Have also heard other options like the developers could build build their own access route quite easily. From garratt lane. This must surely be the best option, thoughts?
