What do you pay a cleaner?

Postby Pud1 » Wed Dec 29, 2010 6:51 pm

I have had the same cleaner for about five years now and I am never sure how often to give her a rise. She cleans my two bedroom flat and does a small amount of ironing. She usually does this in about one and a half hours and I pay her £18. I would be interested to know what other people pay.

I pay £50 for five hours but our cleaner is very good. I've heard that £8 is the usual rate.

I paid my last cleaner £10 per hour, but my new one receives £9 per hour.

Mine is £10/h but I went through an agency before and although I was paying around £10.50/h to the agency, the poor cleaner was barely getting minimum wage, about £6/h!

Thank you very much. Useful to know. It sounds like I am paying her about the right amount.

Going rate for a cleaner?

Postby will1 » Wed Jan 12, 2011 10:23 am

Hi there, I'm looking to find a cleaner for just a couple of hours a week and wondered what the going rate is of you go direct and not through an agency? Thanks

I was looking at another post about nanny bonus. I pay my cleaner £10 an hour and give her a week's pay at Xmas and a week's pay in the summer hols as a bonus. We all get holiday pay from our work on a minimum of 4 weeks, perhaps 2 weeks is not a lot? What do others think about holiday pay/Xmas pay? Should I be giving her 4 weeks? She often has time away from London so does not do the whole year, therefore think it fair but happy to be corrected!

Now this is a tricky one! I think that technically my cleaner is self employed as I did not get her through an agency and therefore, I'm not sure what her paid holiday entitlement is. If she doesn't come because I've asked her not to, eg, when I had the builders in, I paid her in full. When she is on holiday I usually just give her a bit of holiday money, in the summer.

Since my original post, she has asked for a pay rise! I think I will agree to £10 an hour as this seems to be a fair rate and I wouldn't want to lose her.

I pay my housekeeper 12/hr for 5 hours. She comes on mondays (only day available) so I committed to pay her for bank holidays when she doesn't work also. I give her a days pay for Christmas gift. We have a large 4 bed with 2 living rooms and conservatory, so she has her work cut out for her. She does ironing too.

I pay my cleaner £10 an hour, but she does a fantastic job - I went through 3 other cleaners before settling on her (all who quoted £8-£9/hour by the way).
