Advice re quick birth registration in Lambeth

Postby Lieselot nollet » Mon Dec 07, 2015 10:25 am

Hi,

We are belgian and we would love to go to our family during Christmas time. I am expecting our second baby one of these days.

I heard that it takes weeks to get the birth certificate in Lambeth, which is way too long for us.

I truly hope that one of you can advice us on what to do best...

Thanks very very much,

Lieselot

Where are you having your baby? Usually you register in the borough they are born in although I have heard of babies born in Lambeth being registered at Wandsworth town hall

Hi,

Thanks for your quick reply!

We are gonna have him in Lambeth (if possible at home). With a midwife team that is linked to st thomas' hospital.

I have heard of babies being registered in wandsworth, but then it still takes appr two weeks to get the birth certificate, which again is too late...

As far as I know there's no cast iron rule about where you have to be registered. Although I gave birth in Hammersmith & Fulham, I registered in Westminster (or at least the appointment was at a Westminster Register office). If you ring round a few councils you will find there's a big difference in waiting times for appointments: Lewisham is over six weeks while H&F can often offer an appointment in two or three days.

You need to call up and book an appointment and they book up quickly hence wait. You could give them a ring and ask for an appointment on the 23rdfor example if you knew you would definitely have had baby. Or ask if they do emergency or stand by? Depending on how you travel you may be able to take baby withy the form you are given with their birth details and yours on.. I would call and ask. Good luck with the new arrival! Xx

And definitely call a few authorities as pretty sure you don't have to register where you gave birth (though has been a while for me..)

Thanks very much for your advice!

Noah is born last Friday. I will let you know how it went with the registration. My husband is chasing it...

Congratulations!

I'm assuming you will be driving as you can't usually fly within 2 weeks of the birth. You're probably fully aware of this but just thought it may be helpful xx
