Hi

Anybody have recommendations for stair gates? How are the pressure ones? Are they secure or can a child push them down? Any advice/information would be greatly appreciated.

Hello. Pressure ones can be handy but I did find that on my old Victorian walls that when I took it off, the pressure had caused the plaster to crumble where the pad met the wall. Saying that if you get fixed gates you'll have to repair the wall at some point from where you screw it in anyway. I also found that the bar along the bottom on the pressure gates was a bit of a trip hazard on the stairs for visitors who weren't used to them. I've also used a really basic £15 adjustable screw fitted gate from kiddicare which has been great. Inoffensive and works perfectly fine. Some friends have the roller blind style ones at the bottom of their main stairs where they don't want a great big gate on display in the evenings, when guests are over for dinner etc.

The fixed gates are apparently better, more secure and safer . We have pressure gates because we are renting at the moment and drilling into the wall was not an option.

We've managed fine with the pressure gates. You do have to check them regularly. My daughter sometimes pulls at them quite harshly so I have to check the tension because if they become even slightly loose the door can open.

Our gates are called Bettacare and are supposed to be the best pressure gates on the market. Our stairway is quite wide so we had to buy extension gates so it can get quite expensive. Hope this helps.

I would just say do your homework on the size and shape of your openings before buying! I have made two expensive mistakes with gates that don't fit or need extra bits of wood to fit on the wall due to position of skirting board (which clearly we haven't got round to buying). Also bear in mind that some of the cheaper gates (partic pressure fix I think) are designed so that they are permanently shut and then you just open them when needed - this didn't work for us as I wanted one in my kitchen entrance and just wanted to be able to shut when wanted to keep my little one out or in the kitchen.

we've just installed Lascal Kiddiguard stair gates at the bottom and top of our stairs. They were the only ones that worked in old victorian house with banisters and where you can't wall to wall mount a pressure gate.
They are a bit more pricey but we love them. very happy.
They are on sale on Kiddicare at the moment. 7 days left!

Lindam pressure gates work for us and for friends' children. We're lucky we never have dinner guests who would be offended by the look of a safety device

I live in a Victorian house and we have Bettacare pressure gates. They have an attachment so you can use the gates with a wall on one side and a bannister on the other.
