Does Newton prep split the children into sets?

Postby hellokittyerw » Fri Nov 11, 2016 6:40 pm

Hello,

Does anyone know if Newton prep splits the children into sets according to ability? And if they do setting, from what age and in which subjects?

My child will start reception there next year, and just realised I've never asked the school about this..

Many thanks!

Yes they do in Maths, English and French. They do in Year 4. I am not sure before this year.

From upper school (year 3) they do some kind of ability sorting. They are trying to make it a "soft" sort of streaming, to make it possible for children to move between sets, but effectively they are still doing it.

Thank you so much!

What is your feeling, does it work well?
Mainly, does it hurt the confidence of the children in the "lower" sets?

In year three it seems quite low key, but I suspect the differential increases with time. It's probably the case that some children, depending on their outlook, will not be happy being in lower sets. But, it's also probably true that, ultimately, they are probably happier in a class working at their level, rather than struggling to keep up.

I suppose if they want to put in the work they can probably improve their grades and move up.
