Norfolk - advice on areas

Postby SamT » Mon Feb 13, 2017 10:20 pm

Can anyone recommend places / cottages to stay in Norfolk for two kids (4yr and 1.5yr) and three adults. Where is a good place to go what are good, child-friendly things to do there around Easter time...

Thanks!

Sheringham is great - where my mum always used to take my sister, brother and I for all holidays. Lots of stuff to do geared towards kids and there's even a steam train that runs between Sheringham and Holt which we always loved. There's a big indoor swimming pool with a couple of slides, lots of shops and arcades, a theatre, great pubs and ice cream shops and the seafront is lovely. Also a short trip on the train or in the car to Cromer where there's a big pier and fun fair.

Further info here: http://www.tournorfolk.co.uk/sheringham.html

Lots of cottages/houses to rent on Airbnb and nofolkcottages.co.uk. Love the look of this one which I think used to be an old toilet block! https://www.norfolkcottages.co.uk/north ... ee-retreat

Enjoy!

Personally I love the area between Thornham and Cley, the best beaches are Wells which leads on to Holkham with the benefit of a shorter walk from the car park & Brancaster. Holkham Hall is worth visiting and always has egg painting etc for Easter, also an adventure playground and bike hire, or walks round the beautiful park. Bircham Windmill is great for your age children , a few animals roaming around , bread making and seeing how a windmill works.. There is the soft play at Norfolk Lavender if the weather is bad , otherwise there are some amazing walks, worth taking a backpack carrier for your youngest, favourites are Blakeney to Cley and back via Wiverton Cafe - as seen in Normal for Norfolk- need to book in advance, a short circular walk ( can be muddy) at Burnham Norton and then lunch in the Jolly Sailors- which is very family friendly. Houghton Hall is a stunning country house with playground that is worth a visit. Simple horse riding at Walsingham stables, Black Lion in Walsingham is great. farmers market at Creak Abbey Studios the first Saturday of every month is really good, also their cafe at anytime and space and toys outside for the children to play safely. Burnham Market -good for browsing the shops but no pavement so a nightmare with kids, but there is a good playground. Other pubs are The Dun Cow at Salthouse, Red Lion at Stiffkey ( lovely walks in the marshes) and the Anchor at Morston - fantastic seal trips from Morston. Burnham Overy Staithe - walk out to Gun Hill is beautiful but perhaps a bit long for you at the moment, would work on a scooter though. watch the tides on the beach as they can be lethal. Loads of accommodation options, look at Sowerbys, glaven valley or blakeney cottages to start with. Hope this helps-such an amazing area of the country and not that far from SW London.

I would second the area around Sheringham in north Norfolk too. Near to Holt and beautiful, no incredible beach at Wells-next-the-Sea.

We stayed at this self catering accommodation last summer and it was gorgeous. So peaceful and perfect for all the family to stay together (we were three generations) - http://www.rookeryfarmnorfolk.com/rookery-farm-barns/

Sheringham beach is lovely in a British bucket and spade sort of way and we enjoyed a lunch here http://funkymackerel.com/

Don't miss a day out in this park for the kids - brilliant!

The Pigs near Holt is a great gastro pub that has an outdoor children's play area. You can also stay, so check it out. Also try The Wiveton Bell.

Holkham Hall. lovely to visit http://www.holkham.co.uk/ and Pensthorpe Natural Park.

Maybe too cold, but we took a little launch on the Broads from Stalham which was great fun.

You'll love it!! have fun.

Agree on area between thornham and cley as above and activities. Would add Norfolk hideaways also worth a look for cottages etc. Hunstanton has some activities e.g. Sea life centre but we've tended to do those when weather. It great, preferring brancaster or holkham/wells beach. Fab area!
Rose and crown Snettisham also worth a visit (good kids play area outside) and sandringham within striking distance.
Have a fab time!

I am slowly narrowing it down but I wondered what all the Norfolk experts think of Blakeney to stay around Easter? ;)

My vote goes to the Cley-Wiveton-Blakeney area. We started out renting in Blakeney every year since 2005 and ended up buying our own place in Cley village next to the windmill for holidays because we love it so much. Our place has 2 double bedrooms and 1 twin bedroom and has been fully renovated so would probably be perfect for you - we don't rent it out, but if you are interested you can PM me. It's a gorgeous place and right on the North Norfolk coast path.

For stuff to do there - my kids love the walk to Cley beach, crabbing off Blakeney quay and swimming in the quay (with wetsuits - it's muddy), Wiveton Hall for lunches, afternoon teas and dinners (make sure you book), the Dun Cow with it's lovely beer garden where kids have room to go crazy and Pensthorpe. My Norfolk does sailing lessons and there are seal boat trips from Morston. Best fish and chips is French's in Wells and you can take them to the beach about 1km away - that beach was voted the best beach in Britain last year.

Blakeney or Cley would be a great choice at any time of the year, both have amenities within walking distance and are a short drive from many others. The views over the marshlands out to sea are second to none. Have a fantastic time!

Personally I don't think you can beat the stretch between Sheringham and Wells-next-the-Sea as other NVNers above have already said. Albeit I am rather biased having been going there for the past 40 years.

In the words of Victor Kiam (remember him??) I loved it so much I bought a holiday home. If you visit http://www.swanlodgebarns.co.uk you will find floor plans, photos and an up to date availability calendar.

For a really upmarket experience there is an amazing new barn conversion 3 miles inland behind the villages of Morston and Langham https://www.ownersdirect.co.uk/accommodation/p6954426 Accommodates up to 9 guests and a well behaved dog. Pricing ranges from £1,200-£2,600 per week.

Where ever you stay you will have a wonderful week. You must make sure you visit the seals at Blakeney Point and go crabbing off Blakeney quay. So many other family focused activities up there. Enjoy!
