British v. American Schools

Postby LANewbieinLondon » Wed Apr 27, 2011 7:01 pm

Hello,

Is there anyone who can offer any insight as to the differences between American and British schools at the nursery and primary school levels? Is is difficult for children to transition from one to the other?

Also, if anyone has any experience with Clapham and Streatham Junior School, your views would be very much appreciated.

Thanks,
Heidy

No it would not be difficult to transition from one to the other. Especially at the primary level, and even at the secondary level. While British Schools officially start a year earlier than US schools and the start date is much more rigid in the UK. Many children in the US do pre-school or Pre-K , so the learning starts at the same time. Children actually start structured learning at the same time (around 5-6). The years are one ahead of grades, so a child in Year 1 in the UK would enter Kindergarten in the US, Year 2 is 1st Grade and so on.
