Moving to Clapham South

Postby Jetsettingbaby » Wed May 11, 2011 9:14 am

Finally found a place to live, in Clapham South very excited. Now for the mundane job of finding a preschool, Doctors, good coffee shop, and also meet other mums ;-) is there an play group that meets up there?
Lots to do.. Thanks in Advance

Glad you've got somewhere sorted!

I'm Clapham South too, so welcome.

My son goes to Woodentops Nursery on Thornton Road. There's a day nursery and kindergarten. He's been going since Jan and is very happy there. I also hear lots of good things about Nightingales on Malwood Road, but they're small (6 children up to 2, 8 children 2-3yrs) so it's not easy to get into.

My GP is on Balham Hill, Bedford Hill Family Practice. Bit variable, but Dr Knight is very good, especially with children.

Playgroups - there's the free One o'Clock Club Mon-Thur afternoons which is on Clapham Common, next to the playground on Windmill Drive. Back on Malwood Road, there's a Thursday morning drop-in playgroup at the Church of the Ascension. It gets pretty busy.

There is also Asquith Nursery on Radbourne Road which my son attends and he loves it. They are an excellent nursery in every respect. There's a one oclock club on Poynders Road which is brilliant because it never gets as busy as the Clapham Common one and it has a lovely outdoor area right next to a general playground. Clapham Manor Childrens Centre on Clapham High Street has a lovely play area which is open to the public from 11am most mornings. They also have a lovely room for babies inside. Abbeville pub on Abbeville Road is very child friendly complete with a menu - we often go there with our two under twos for dinner, best to go closer to 6pm to have the pick of tables. The food is excellent! Also Pizza Express on Abbeville Road is very child friendly as is Bon Bons cafe.

Hi,
I'm also in Clapham South and can recommend Oaktree Nursery in Ramsden Road, Balham. My son has been there for the last 2 years. It's only mornings, 5 days, so mainly for non-working Mums. It was rated Outstanding by Ofsted and the staff are fantastic. I love it.
The Avalon pub on Bedford Hill has a big, nice beer garden and we take our kids there all the time.
We are also patients at Bedford Hill Family Practice and I agree with comments made earlier.
Also on at The Ascension Church in Malwood Rd is a drop-in music class for pre-schoolers called Fruity Tunes. It's fun and not too hectic. £6 a session.
Glow Lounge does good coffee - Clapham South next to Gigalum. They have an outside space, not great for toddlers but good when you need a good coffee!
Good luck settling in! :)

Welcome! Not quite sure where Clapham South extends to but here's a few recommendations for you...

Nursery - woodentops is supposed to be great - I have several friends with kids there and all are happy - the daycare facility is also highly rated.

Elm Park nursery on Clarence avenue is great

Clapham Park Montessori operates out of the contact centre on Hambalt rd (just off Abbeville) - they run an infant community on Tuesday and Thursday mornings for 1 1/2 - 2 1/2 year olds - it's fairly oversubscribed but is terrific. My older daughter went there and my younger duaghter is about to. Can't recommend it enough.

Also at the contact centre is Common Ground playgroup - tuesdaya dn Friday mornings I think.

Doctors - I go to the Clapham Park Group Practice on Clarence Avenue. Big practice, lots of doctors and mostly excellent (locums can be not so great).

hope that helps!

Do check out the NCT Postnatal Directory which has lots of ideas of things to do - many of which are accessible from Clapham South. There are masses of playgroups around including the Ascension one on Thursdays mentioned above, the Salvation Army and several at St Stephen's Church on Weir Road. The Directory is about to be updated so look out for the new edition too. http://www.nct.org.uk/in-your-area/clapham/about
