Dear NappyValleyNetter,
Due to our recent family holiday, my children were a little behind on their regular (ish) calls to grandparents.
So under strict instructions, my eldest picked up the phone to my mother and proceeded to tell her stories of our recent trip and my sunburn.
I was only half-listening but could tell from some of her answers that there were a lot of questions about her recent birthday. I then realised that not only had she failed to send a thank you note for her gift but she hadn’t even received it – with all the holiday hassle I’d forgotten to pass it on.
I hurriedly scribbled a note and bounced up and down in front of her, hoping she’d understand the urgency and would actually read it.
It ‘sort-of’ worked.
“Oooh hang on Grandma,” she said, “there is one thing I forgot to say…”
She paused whilst reading and then said, WORD FOR WORD:
“Before you hang up please can you tell a little lie and say thank you for your birthday present I promise I’ll give it to you later.”
