ALLEYN’S SCHOOL SEES STRONG A LEVEL RESULTS AMONGST EXTRAORDINARY CIRCUMSTANCES

Girls and boys at co-educational Alleyn’s in London have received a very strong set of results to maintain the School’s tradition of academic success.

Year 13 students at Alleyn’s have this morning received some excellent A Level grades from the examination boards, befitting their hard work and commitment throughout their time at School, despite the extraordinary and very challenging circumstances in which examination grades were awarded this year.

Boys and girls both performed well at Alleyn’s, which is one of the UK’s leading day schools and the first of its kind to become fully co-educational, back in 1976. The vast majority will go on to take up places at leading universities in the UK and overseas.

Headmaster Dr Gary Savage said: “I am truly proud of our students’ achievements every year, and this extraordinary year is no exception. I trust their results are a cause of satisfaction, relief and even pride – they certainly should be, as they are the product of many years’ hard work and dedication by our brilliant students. I am full of admiration for the impressive fortitude this unique cohort has shown throughout an undoubtedly frustrating period, and for all they have achieved academically and generally in their years at Alleyn’s. We know what excellent young people they are, and we have been proud and privileged to know them. I am confident they will go on to flourish as Alleyn Old Boys & Girls (AOBGs), taking all they have learned at the School with them into adulthood.”

Head of Upper School Dr Rob Atkinson said: “I am very pleased for our students, the vast majority of whom are progressing to their first-choice courses at UK and overseas universities and specialist centres of learning. We wish them well for the exciting opportunities and new chapters that lie ahead. We do expect that the picture around exam results is likely to change and shall stay abreast of developments as they unfold. In the meantime, Results Day will be as busy as ever. Inevitably, some students may have been disappointed, but wherever necessary our dedicated sectional and academic staff will focus on guiding and advising our leavers, in a seamless continuation of their tireless work to inspire, challenge and support students throughout their life at Alleyn’s.”

In common with all schools, Alleyn’s teachers were asked to make their best professional assessment of the grades they believe that students would have been most likely to secure if teaching, learning and public exams had proceeded as normal. This was a process that has never been attempted before and was forced by circumstances that nobody could have foreseen when the students started their A level journey.

Throughout, teachers have sought to marry academic rigour with pastoral care and compassion as part of the holistic provision for which the School is so well-known: a learning community within which boys and girls learn, grow, overcome challenges, and strive to succeed together, whatever the circumstances.
