In the heart of Clapham North, a ground floor flat underwent a remarkable transformation, taking its design to new heights. Johanna Endres-Castillo from Speaking of Interiors, a boutique interior design studio in Clapham, led the interior design. The homeowners, a couple with a preference for a bright and modern aesthetic, were looking to transform the flat from two to three bedrooms. The project aimed to extend and breathe new life into the couple’s living space, incorporating an open-plan kitchen, dining and living area, as well as infusing quirky personal touches throughout.
Vision and approach
The clients wanted to create a space that had the versatility to be both luxurious and homely, and the award-winning Speaking of Interiors took on the challenge with a collaborative approach and a myriad of ideas to make their vision a reality.
One of the focal points of this refurbishment was the open-plan kitchen, dining and living area. The objective was to enhance the sense of space, making it ideal for socialising, and to create a seamless flow between the different functional zones. Sleek, modern cabinetry in neutral tones was paired with marble-like countertops to achieve a clean and uncluttered look. The off-white and neutrals as the primary colour palette set a harmonious backdrop, allowing wood tones and the green accent colours to pop.

The master bedroom retreat
In the master bedroom, the goal was a calming and inviting atmosphere. Johanna opted for a warm colour palette, where soothing but vibrant blues took centre stage as the accent colour for the cabinetry and bespoke headboard. This choice, as well as the bespoke cosy window seat, created a relaxing space, a haven for rest and rejuvenation – and loads of storage! Wood accents were delicately integrated through furniture and the pendant light. The room exuded a sense of tranquillity, perfect for unwinding after a long day.

Quirky and whimsical personal details
What truly sets this refurbishment apart are the quirky and whimsical personal details reflecting the couple’s unique personalities. These bespoke touches add charm and character, from peacock handles to wallpapered ceilings. The most remarkable feature is the hidden door leading to a guest bedroom or a private cinema, cleverly concealed within the design. This unexpected feature brings in an element of surprise and showcases the couple’s playful and imaginative nature.
