Salary = employee

Surely most cleaners are self employed or employed by an agency

What I find upsetting about this post is the implication that people do not pay their cleaners when they are away?  Probably the same people that did not pay their cleaners during Covid.

It is a salary for them just like your salary.  You get paid when the office is closed don't you?

Makes me furious.

Ah, the Christmas bonus for your cleaner—a true hallmark of the holiday spirit! The goal, of course, is to give just enough to say “I’m generous,” but not so much that they think you’ve won the lottery. It’s a delicate art, like choosing the right wine to pair with guilt.

Perhaps you could base the amount on how many times they’ve had to pick your hair out of the plughole this year? Or how often they’ve pretended not to notice the chaotic state of your guest bathroom? Surely there’s a calculator for this somewhere.

But really, the safest bet is to slide an envelope across the table with a vague smile and say, “I wasn’t sure what to give you, but I hope this feels right.” That way, if it’s too little, it’s the thought that counts—and if it’s too much, well, now they have to clean extra carefully next year. Win-win!

We are usually away for 1-2 weeks over Christmas. So we pay ours that money as a bonus plus something extra.

I don't think our cleaner could really cope financially without two weeks of pay, as at much higher salary I do get paid during holidays.

Most people I know now have either stopped doing Christmas payments to cleaners or just provide a box of chocolates/something small.

Cleaners already earn a lot

I generally leave the equivalent of what I pay the cleaner weekly + some extra. So for example, if you pay your cleaner £45 a week, maybe give £50 or so.

Hi
We have a cleaner for ten hours a week and we pay her the equivalent of ten hours money as a bonus plus a significant present which is about £100.

So about £250 for the total.

Hope this helps.

We haven't had a cleaner before - assuming you are happy with your cleaner - how much money do you give as a Christmas bonus?

Thanks
