I listened to a podcast called Sliced Bread where they do scientific investigations into products to see whether their claims can be supported, and they did one on whitening toothpastes. You might prefer to listen to it yourself as it's not long, but in essence the conclusion from speaking with dentists and other trained professionals is that none of the over the counter whitening products - be they toothpastes or other things - will have much impact, and some of the other products could actually damage your enamel. Their guidance was, by all means buy a whitening toothpaste if you want, but don't spend extra on them as you won't benefit anymore from them than a normal toothpaste.
