In which case secondary school for definite but primary school depending on how dangerous the route is and how mature the child is for their age.

We've got to do it at some point though - I won't be walking him to school when he's 16. So it is really useful to understand when people have started. Thanks for the replies so far

Depends on how much you trust the general public with your kids I guess. Drivers, groups of teens and otherwise. It appears there are several reports of schoolkids being mugged, but some would say that's life experience and worth the independence (I wouldn't). Don't think what everyone else does with their kids can really help with this decision IMO, as everyone has different appetite for risks for both themselves and their kids.

I think it's also a function of the types of roads.

If they have to concentrate to cross a very busy road then I'd be inclined to only let them go when they're older, if they're quiet backstreets then it doesn't really matter as much.

Year 6. There are many kids around here who do 10+ and travel to senior schools by train on bus on their own

Hi,

We're thinking of moving schools for our son in Y6. The new school is a 25 minute walk away between the commons. At what point did your kids start walking to and from school without you in primary - if they did? Especially if 10 minutes walk or longer. Thank you!
