Re: Ear Piercing - Tips ?

Questions like this always amuse me. We are about twenty minutes from the centre of one of the greatest cities in the world so why, when it’s something like this which is a one-off, do you just think of doing it locally? My daughter and most of her friends had theirs done in Harrods. It was great an...

Re: Travel Photography: Off camera flash

Jeez, it’s a holiday, not a photo shoot! Are you going to lug around a light stand to put your flash on? And an umbrella to soften it? I have taken my flash with me a few times on big trips and can honestly say I’ve never used it. You have to be fairly advanced to balance OC flash with ambient. If y...

Re: Holidays for single parents

I agree with supergirl who says you should turn it into an adventure. Where is the villa? Assuming it’s not on a desert island there must be stuff to do in the surrounding area. Get a guide book and do some planning for things to do with your kids when you get there. The advantage of being on your o...

Re: Ring resizing

I’m sure Asquith’s on Northcote Road (ten minute walk from CJ) could do it. Might be worth calling first.

Re: Husband invited his dad on our family holiday without asking

This is a really tricky one as to do anything about it now you’re going to have to look like the bad guy and you don’t want it to affect your relationship with him. It’s totally outrageous that your husband asked him without consulting you and your FIL may be surprised too. I’m inclined to say you s...

Re: dishonest about bursary application

I would be extremely careful about saying anything. While what she did was wrong (maybe it was her husband’s idea and she feels guilty) she presumably told you confidentially and by telling the school you are breaking that trust with the potential consequence of her child having to leave the school ...

Re: Day 3 - Andalucian pilates retreat with Jane Wake and Lynn Rae (8 July)

Annabel - you said in your weekly email that this had made team NVN “green around the gills”. I was expecting she had had a terrible time and had brought back a bug which had made you all sick! You might want to look up the meaning of the phrase - it’s not the same as “green with envy”.

Re: Save the date for the Northcote Road Festival on 14 July

Thank you for for your reply. It’s not at all an odd suggestion that the private school holiday dates should be taken into account as this is an affluent area with a large number of private schools and very many families have children who attend them. It’s not about favouring private schools over st...

Re: Save the date for the Northcote Road Festival on 14 July

Yet again this is taking place after the private schools have broken up when many families will be away. For some reason screening the men’s final seems to be more important than attracting local (and well-heeled!) families. I don’t get it.

Why don’t you ring up a few schools you might be interested in and ask them?

Re: Sister in law has asked if my teenage niece can lodge with us

Wow! I actually think this is an outrageous request! How are you supposed to manage her? Will she be allowed to come and go as she pleases or will you have to be a substitute parent? Who will oversee her education, go to parents’ evenings etc? What happens at weekends? What happens if she gets into ...

Re: Can't keep up with extravagant fortieth parties

This is obviously a new thing - it certainly didn't happen in my day or if it did I wasn't invited! As the previous poster said, people will have invited you because they like you, and therefore if they are real friends they will not care one iota if your bash isn't up to their financial standards. ...

Re: Emmanuel school

It is a nightmare and getting worse. The only light on the horizon is that Broomwood and Thomas’s are both opening senior schools in the next few years so there should be a few more places. Also don’t forget Ibstock Place and the Harrodian if you’re looking for co-ed schools. Also St John’s Leatherh...

Re: Best all round multivitamin for women?

At the very least you should be taking vitamin D. There is a lot of research that suggests we don’t get enough through sunlight especially in winter. Why don’t you go to somewhere like Planet Organic or Wholefoods and talk to one of their advisers about what in particular you’re trying to improve. B...

Re: Helping family members with compulsive buying behaviour

I think you should write them a good old-fashioned letter. Speaking to them obviously doesn’t get the message across. Word it nicely (you could say it’s spoiling Christmas and birthdays as the kids are so used to presents that getting them that it doesn’t feel special any more) and get your husband ...
