Re: Heavy Good Vehicles in Earlsfield - Petition

Thanks for the additional info. All I would say is that Merton aren't going to listen to anything that Wandsworth say about removing their width restrictions (Merton is Labour run and Wandsworth Tory run). Therefore, I think you will need to focus on measures that Wandsworth BC could take unilateral...

Re: Heavy Good Vehicles in Earlsfield - Petition

I agree that it is a real pain but I'm not sure what Wandsworth BC would be able to do about it if the traffic is headed to Merton? Merton council are hardly likely to want to encourage the HGV's to go onto their streets instead of Wandsworths and I'm not sure how WBC could force Merton BC to do som...

Re: party wall surveyor - neighbours being very difficult

I'm guessing that your neighbours won't go for this but having gone through (the fairly pointless) process when we did our loft, our neighbours agreed to a less formal approach the second time. Basically we both took photos of the "before" and then signed a contract re hours of work, makin...

Re: Indoor-Outdoor Tiles

I would second Rak. One word of warning though...I wanted my indoor and outdoor tiles at the same level but every single person I spoke to said it wasn't a good idea because water might seep under the doors (no idea whether this would happen in practice). We also had a bit of an issue with access to...

Re: Do I need integrated blinds in bifold doors?

I didn't like the integrated blinds in bifolds at all but after deciding that we really needed something to shade us from the sun (and investigating millions of options) we finally just bought semi-sheer curtain panels from Ikea. They are 3M long so you just take them up to the right height and are ...

Has anyone used an online estate agent?

Perhaps I am being stingy but 1.25% for selling a London house seems an awful lot of cash.

Considering Sarah Beeny's online agency as I can do viewings myself and apparently the agency does the negotiation bit.

Any thoughts? Views from anyone that has sold this way particularly welcome.

Re: SAHM?

I think that in some law firms, there is a culture of expectation that a person can and will work long hours because the other half (usually wife) will pick up kids, run the household etc. I'm sure it's not like that in all firms but it definitely was in mine. For example I never once got asked if i...

Re: Road rage from a local businessman

Unfortunately I am not that shocked. I see crazy levels of aggression from drivers towards cyclists most days that I cycle in London. I think the argument is that the driver feels that the cyclist is cycling too far over into the road which I agree is inconsiderate but is also PERFECTLY LEGAL. As is...

Re: New tax free childcare scheme - how does it work?

Thanks for that cynic. I saw the MSE info before posting but it didn't answer my question about entry into the scheme. I have now twigged that to get the £2,000 per child tax free childcare, I have to be paying £10,000 plus per year in childcare (20% of costs are covered up to a max of £2K per year)...

New tax free childcare scheme - how does it work?

Has anyone heard of the new tax free childcare scheme, due to be introduced this Autumn where you get 20% of childcare costs back? It looks like it will be helpful to some and not to others. Doesn’t help those earning over £150K but good for those who are under that threshold and self employed or wh...

Re: Just can't get my toddler to eat, and doctor won't help!

Nightmare. I can understand why you are worried. You've probably tried all of this but in case not: - always eat meals with him and emphasise how delicious your food is. - try him in a different place/different people eg at a grandma's house without you there. - get him to help you to cook the meal....

Re: Balham or Earlsfield? Pros/cons...

In fairness I've not lived in Balham but I would also big up Earlsfield. I live towards the Tooting end and I feel like I have the best of both worlds - the trainline and more grown up atmosphere of Earlsfield and the tube and more edgy vibe in Tooting Broadway (which is now seriously cool and has a...

Indian Express on Garratt Lane for great value set meal curry Left field but Ambience in Wimbledon is great for Turkish. Huge portions and it feels fresher and healthier than your average take out. Free baklava too. Chez Vous and Meza in tooting are similar and also good. My other regulars are Amara...
