Family friendly dog breeds - any advice?

Hi there,

We've decided to get a dog and I'm in the early stages of researching which breed to get. Can anyone one recommend a breed/mixed breed that they have had? The main thing is child friendly, either small or medium sized and short haired. Thank you!
