Re: Whitgift & child safety

Well the only time my son got mugged when he was a pupil at Whitgift was when he was coming home from a friend’s house in a posh part of Clapham after school - and Boris Johnson was the mayor then .., The school bus takes ages and my son hated using it on the very few occasions he needed to - the tr...

Re: Cockapoo or cavapoo

Neither! There are so many lovely established breeds of dogs where you will have a much better idea of traits and temperament, why go down the ‘designer dog’ route? Because they’ve become so fashionable puppy mills are producing poodle crosses in huge numbers with scant regard for the health of the ...

Re: Gazundering coming back?

Yes it is .. it happened to us last summer. Our buyers dropped the price by just under 4% just before exchange. It was extremely frustrating but we didn’t want to lose the place we were buying so we ended up taking the hit. I still feel bitter about it - I did fantasise about leaving a kipper behind...

Re: Girls who have bullied my daughter now going to her preferred secondary school. What should she / I do?

This happened to my daughter - she was delighted when she got into her top choice school. She’d been bullied and excluded during Y6 by two girls who’d been her best friends throughout the rest of primary school. At first it looked like they were both going to another local school but then one of the...

Re: Graveney school

My family has had very mixed experiences at Graveney - some children have done extremely well, others not so much… The one who did best academically didn’t get into extension in Y7 - they were placed in the ‘upper’ stream but he ended up being put in top sets for GCSEs for Y10-11 and got all 9s. My ...

Re: Would you take school fees from a parent on the basis that they will be heavily involved in the whole process

I’d be very wary - without this assistance would you be able to pay school fees (bearing in mind the swingeing yearly increases) or would it be completely impossible? As far as I know, it’s very hard to get financial help from the school once your child has already started as the bursary and scholar...

Re: How much do you think I can expect schools fees to increase by

Our son went to a local private secondary school from the age of ten. At the time the fees were around £11,000 a year - by the time he left they were more than £18,000 and they’re now more than £22,000. On top of fees you’ve also got uniform (yes you can get secondhand but there’s still a lot of it)...

Re: Father getting serious with new partner, not sure about mine and my sister's inheritance

I’m not sure there is much you can do to be honest. My father-in-law remarried in his 50s to a woman with two adult children (my husband was my father-in-law’s only child). Before he died a few years ago, he’d transferred all his (considerable) assets to his wife and there was nothing legally that m...

Re: London Steiner school in Balham rated 'inadequate' by Ofsted is still not meeting all standards

Having been a parent at the Steiner school albeit a while ago now, I can’t say I’m at all surprised by the OFSTED findings. The few months my son was there were utterly miserable and once you understand the philosophy underpinning the so-called education on offer it is astounding that any Steiner sc...

Re: being lobbied very hard to get dog, what is a good first family dog?

There’s nothing about cockerpoos/cavapoos etc that intrinsically makes them ‘perfect’ family dogs. They’ve become fashionable - and they’re expensive- so at the moment they’re everywhere. A few years ago, it was labradoodles but you hardly ever see them around now. You need to ask yourself what trai...

Re: Steiner School Balham - looking for feedback

We made the mistake of sending our eldest to the Steiner school when we were in a similar situation (moving back to the UK from abroad where he would have been staying in part time kindergarten and full time reception seemed a bit much). It was a complete disaster - he had some learning differences ...

Re: Choosing between schools

First of all, which is closest or has the easiest journey? Your son will be commuting there and back, in the morning rush hour, laden down with school bag/sports kit/musical instrument for 7 years so a quick journey without too many changes is better, especially when he’s a grumpy mid-teen who doesn...

Dog friendly cottage for Christmas - recommendations please

We’d like to spend Christmas away this year - it’s the first Christmas without both my parents and other family issues mean that our usual big family get-together wouldn’t be that festive. So we thought we’d like to spend the holiday somewhere with just us. We’re hoping for a dog-friendly cottage so...

Re: Novice dog agility classes?

I’d second the recommendation for Believe in Magic dog training - our dog loves the advanced class Sadly London is not particularly blessed with agility classes ... there’s one in Ham, near Richmond http://www.capablecanines2002.com/ Otherwise you’re looking at further out - google found this one in...
