Re: Au pair cost

It has always been a government scheme and you can check the rules, recommendations and which nationalities are eligible on the .gov website. I agree you need to be aware of NI and employer’s contribution tax rules. A colleague of mine didn’t bother and, at the end of a year, his au pair asked him f...

Re: Should we pay son not to work so he can study for A levels?

Presumably your husband is keen for him to go to uni and to do that he will need to write a Personal Statement. Experience of working in the real world will strengthen this. Not to have done any proper, paid work at his age can look a bit odd. And any experience of work gained now, however humble, w...

Re: Private school officials called Labour’s Bridget Phillipson ‘chippy’ as it steps up campaign against VAT on schools

As private school fees have been rising far faster than inflation for the past twenty years yet the number of privately-educated students has actually increased over that period, that suggests most parents will simply pay the extra amount.

Re: When do i need to take my daughter's dummy away?

All three of mine had orthodontic dummies which I took away when their teeth started coming through. Totally agree giving them to Dummy Fairy works a treat. Child agrees which gift they would like, puts all dummies in ‘magic’ (cardboard) box at bedtime and - lo!- finds dummies replaced by lovely gif...

Re: Car stolen outside house

Steering wheel lock an easy, cheap and effective deterrent. In our road none of the cars with these have ever been stolen. There is a curious reluctance to use them (a neighbour once said to me ‘but they’re so 80s’!!!) but they really do work. Which is why the police recommend them.

Re: Advice to support children and young people struggling with their mental health

I’m sure this is all good stuff. But with no paragraph spaces or gaps after full stops it is a tough read!

Re: Sons friend a bad influence

I agree with the previous posters and would just add, having gone through this with three children, that it is worth taking the time to explain in a kind and supportive way how various types of drink can affect you. When there was an incident with one of my younger son’s friends swigging vodka for a...

Re: Dilemma SIL

I agree with Step Away! This has become your problem because it is (as is often the case) the s-in-laws who communicate, not the husbands. My s-in-law kept asking us to go on super-expensive holidays with them, leaving me to word the embarrassed refusals. One day I suddenly wondered why I was having...

Re: December 2022 Strike dates.

It would be if it was accurate. The 19th-24th Dec driving examiners’ strike is NW England, Yorkshire and the Humber only. So possibly other dates are incorrect too.

Re: After school nanny eating our food

There is another point which I don’t think has been discussed and that is the value of your children eating with an adult. We liked our nanny eating with our children because she was showing that she enjoyed sharing a variety of foods (especially important when it comes to veg, salad etc), could dem...

Re: is anger in elderly people a sign of something more than frustration/

Any change in personality could be a sign of dementia. Perhaps it’s worth trying her GP again, with specific examples and how it is affecting her/you or making her difficult to deal with. Maybe keep a diary of your interactions for a couple of weeks? Her GP is likely to be key to any help so you nee...

Re: Children Skiing

Sandown in Esher do all kinds of dry ski courses for all ages. We had two children who had learned to ski on school trips but a younger one who hadn’t. I think he did a series of about 4 or 5 early evening lessons. We just hoped it would help him stand up, as you say, but he whizzed off really confi...

Re: How do I get a grease stain out of a white shirt?

Ordinary bar of soap, wet it so it’s soft, rub plenty on both sides of stain and leave for half an hour before washing in usual way. I found this online when youngest son ‘borrowed’ oldest son’s newest designer shirt and ate chips on the way home … 😱 It worked perfectly.
