Re: New 20mph zone on the A205?

I think the trouble you (juliantenniscoach) have obviously taken to check statistics should be respected, and I for one would not quarrel with them in general.  To me though (although I accept not to others) the issue is different - do we want our cities to be increasingly dominated by more and more...

Re: New 20mph zone on the A205?

This is obviously a completely life changing catastrophe - I don’t know exactly, but if the distance is 1.5 miles (which I think is about right, but happy to be corrected) then at an average of 35mph it takes 2.025 minutes and at 20 mph it’s 1.500 minutes.

Re: Who else feels outraged about what councils have done to Wandsworth Bridge Rd and Streatham  High Rd

Oh muddyboots .... of course it's not free to own a car but ...... it's not about that, it's about the marginal cost of using a shared resource, in this case a particular road, and for all practical purposes that is zero, except possibly at the entry / exit points of the charging zones, which doesn'...

Re: Who else feels outraged about what councils have done to Wandsworth Bridge Rd and Streatham  High Rd

@muddyboots Well perhaps you were not paying attention, which I guess is understandable at university. The Tragedy of the Commons applies to a resource that is free at the point of use (ie has a marginal cost of zero), which for all practical purposes is the case for road users. It’s the same reason...

Re: Who else feels outraged about what councils have done to Wandsworth Bridge Rd and Streatham  High Rd

Interesting reply, deliciously cynical - we have some friends who live on (rather than drive down as a rat run) Valley Road in the Streatham LTN who petitioned Lambeth Council in favour of it when there was a move to abolish or amend it (I’m not sure which) because it had improved their quality of l...

Re: Who else feels outraged about what councils have done to Wandsworth Bridge Rd and Streatham  High Rd

@ muddyboots - There is masses of evidence going back decades that providing more road capacity just generates more traffic.  With our cities increasingly choked by more and more larger and larger cars isn't worth at least trying to see whether the reverse might be true and reducing road capacity mi...

Re: Mayor of London reveals changes coming to Streatham LTN 'ASAP'

With overwhemling evidence going back years that providing more road capacity just generates more traffic and our cities increasingly choked by more and more larger and larger cars isn't it at least worth a try to see whether restricting road capacity might not improve the quality of life for all of...

Re: Decent dinner party wine?

It's probably the same answer - speak to the Wine Twit, especially for people who appreciate wine, as he is able to offer some unusual wines that may be new to them (and you) - it's normally worth 'fessing up if you do take something unusual, say you thought it might be worth a try.  And if you want...

Re: Decent dinner party wine?

Depending where you live drop in to The Wine Twit at 85 NIghtingale Lane.  If you tell them the menu you are planning then they will definitely suggest suitable wines, and possibly quite unusuak, interesting ones.  And they cater for all price ranges except the very cheapest. Hope that helps - and I...

Re: What Wandworth council won’t tell you when they say they are freezing next years council tax…

Democracy really is wonderful isn’t it - just as long as it comes up with the “correct” answer!

Re: Family holiday to Zanzibar

Try Matemwe Bungalows in Zanzibar - and make sure you visit Stonetown - an absolutely fascinating place with masses of history (I'm not a travel agent).  The monument in the cathedral put up after independence to commemorate the people from the Royal Navy who died combatting slavery might offer you ...

Re: Landscaper underquoted but halfway through job.

I'm not a lawyer, and someone who is may offer better advice, but ask yourself: 1. Has the specification changed at all ie have you added to the work on which he quoted, or was it never really agreed in detail? 2. Has he explained in detail why it is more expensive? 3. Are you happy with the way the...
