Re: Well Done Private School Parents!

I think this is an over-simplification. For example, we've won a lot of medals in rowing, which is a sport that most state school children don't get the chance to try until university. State schools just don't have the funds for boats and boathouses. Other sports like gymnastic tend to be offered vi...

Re: Independent school, smallest class size

Bertrum House in Balham had very small class sizes when I looked around - less than 10 per class. Not sure about the acoustics though.

Is Thomas more academic?

Yes I found the Thomas' results confusing. For example we asked how many boys they sent to Winchester - answer from head 'a substantial number'. When we looked in their detailed results booklet they had in fact sent only 1 in the last 10 years.

Re: Just received rejection letter from Broomwood

Thomas', Finton, Hornsby don't envisage children leaving at 7 so don't prep for 7+ either - although quite a few children do move over to the Dulwich schools at that age. And Thomas' isn't a charity either I do feel Broomwood gets a rough ride locally when all the schools actually operate in much th...

Re: Olympic Torch Relay Celebration on Tooting Common

Does that mean that people living on the Streatham side of the common won't be able to go? We overlook it but are in Lambeth.

Re: Babboe Cargobike stolen last night!

Have you tried looking on e-bay and gumtree to see if anyone is trying to sell it?

Nearly bought a trikidoo advertised locally on gumtree but when I spoke to the seller he knew so little about it that I began to suspect it was stolen.

Re: Just received rejection letter from Broomwood

I'd forgotten about that thread MGMidget - interesting.

I think what someone said on it is worth remembering though - all the schools we are talking about are good and it is just a case of horses for courses.

Re: Just received rejection letter from Broomwood

I don't think there's anything underhand about the process. Broomwood tell you from the start that they're selective so you know your deposit doesn't automatically get you a place. The very fact that they operate an assessment process tells you they're oversubscribed - otherwise they wouldn't need t...

Re: Just received rejection letter from Broomwood

Sorry to hear that Lucky Mummy. The waiting list should move a lot come Autumn. Broomwood offers go out (and have to be accepted) much earlier than all the others. This means few initial rejections as people take up the place in case they don't get in elsewhere but once the other offers are made, th...

Re: High View

Ellesmum - you have my sympathies. I have no experience of the school but would feel the same as you given the experiences you've had with them. Kudos to you for not moving to get into the catchment area of BV or HW - in the same situation that is exactly what I would be doing (I'm going to get flam...

Re: Sweep and induction - advice needed please

Mine were emergency inductions so sweep and first gel were done simultaneously.

Re: Sweep and induction - advice needed please

2 inductions and a sweep here too. The sweep is uncomfortable, but a breeze compared to actual labour so try not to worry. With my inductions I went into labour after the gel and babies were delivered within the hour. No tears, no stitches, no epidural (too quick). So it can definitely go smoothly! ...

Re: State versus private - which provides best education?

Completely agree with the last post. I went to a normal state school and got into Oxford so you can do well. But I was lucky and very self-disciplined. I want my kids to have the best chances in life they can, so we will scrimp and save to give them a private education.

Re: miscarriage and getting pregnant again

I fell pregnant when my first was 6 months, miscarried at 8 weeks and then got pregnant again without ever having a period in between. My dr said there was absolutely no need to wait once the mc was 'complete'.

Sorry, you've had to go through it and hope you have another baby soon.
