16 yrs old Christmas present

Postby supergirl » Wed Nov 13, 2024 12:28 pm

Hi all. Hoping you can help me.
We have this thing going on since they ve stopped believing in Santa which is stocking and 1 need 1 want 1 read.

My daughter works hard and is 16 but she is also super cool (as teen goes 🤣🤣🤣 and I mean it with a lot of love I promise).

So I m wondering if like me you have an ultra cool 16yr old girl what are they reading at the moment so I can have ideas.

She had a blanket no to the classics as it s for “boomers” (no matter how i tell her i m not a boomer she doesnt listen 🤣🤣) or school.

Thank you for your help. Sx

I don’t know if you only want to get one book, but Backstory, the independent bookshop in Balham, does a year long subscription where they choose books for the person. I think you fill out a whole form about what you like and they choose the books and you get one a month. My husband bought it for our daughter and she really loves it. She also loves Backstory. You could just go in and ask them what they suggest. They really know what they’re doing in there.

That’s such a fun and thoughtful tradition! If she’s not into classics and wants something more modern, here are some great book ideas based on different interests:

Popular YA Fiction:
  • Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros (if she likes fantasy with romance)
  • The Inheritance Games by Jennifer Lynn Barnes (for a twisty mystery)
  • They Both Die at the End by Adam Silvera (for a heart-wrenching but meaningful read).
Books with Cool, Relatable Vibes:
  • You Have a Match by Emma Lord (fun, heartfelt contemporary)
  • Today Tonight Tomorrow by Rachel Lynn Solomon (rom-com with academic rivals).
Non-Fiction for a Cool, Ambitious Teen:
  • Atomic Habits by James Clear (self-improvement but actually useful)
  • The Confidence Code for Girls by Katty Kay & Claire Shipman (empowering & relatable)
If she has specific interests (music, sports, fashion, etc.), I can suggest more!

I see now that you were asking before Christmas so maybe this will be outdated by next Christmas!! But my 16 year old just got through the "Shatter Me" series by Tahereh Mafi and has now bought a five-book series by Sarah J Maas, the first of which is called A Court of Thorns and Roses. I think they're a 'Fantasy' genre. I don't know anything about the quality of the writing; I'm just so happy she's gotten back into reading and putting the phone down once in awhile!
