Gift ideas for 5 yo birthday girl

Postby jodesy » Wed Apr 15, 2015 1:19 pm

What are universally loved/enjoyed gifts for a 5 yo girl? At this age, girls especially, start to form ideas about what is too baby-ish for them, at the same time, want to give something age appropriate. Any help much appreciated!

Our daughter is counting down to her 5th birthday in July, so I have been gleaning tips from friends with girls aged 5-8 years and then shopping online once children asleep!

Here are the favourites...not sure your budget but hope the ideas help:
1. Little Live pets - a butterfly that "comes live in the palm of your hand" a batteries make it flutter its wings. Can but with the butterfly house. RRP £23 but currently £14.97 on Amazon

2. Little Live pets bird (alone or in a cage) - feathered toy bird responds to your touch and sings, whistles or cheeps at you. My 7 year old goddaughter has 3 in different colours. Individual birds available around £10 or buy in a cage for £20.

3. A trip to "Build a Bear Workshop" where children can select their own soft toy bear / pony/ other creature (including Frozen theme) and then get involved bringing them to life, using the store machine to fill bear with soft stuffing, making a wish as they add a heart, dressing in (overpriced) outfits. They often sell giftcards at reduced rates. We have been to some great parties here - very happy children and bears have been treasured.

4. Craft gifts - making a headband set. Currently reduced from £20 to £10 on Amazon. At least the fun lasts with dressing up later and it is fun seeing your little one's style choices.

5. Craft - decorate your own jewellery box, adding sparkly bits

6. Frozen-themed gifts ranging from dressing up outfits to pyjamas and first "telling the time"clocks

7. A special outing eg theatre (the Rose Kingston and Watermans in Brentford are amazing), science museum (we love driving to the Discovery centre in Bracknell for loads of hands-on fun and massive outdoor playgrounds and bike areas) or Kew Gardens. With the choice to buy a special memento in the gift shop.

Have fun! It is such a special age. Another fun activity to enjoy would be creating a little photo album or video of the birthday/ friends/ adventure as they love looking back on it.

All my Godchildren, and nieces and nephews around that age got a Fun and Games mat for Christmas. It is a fabric mat covered with games, colouring ideas, snakes and ladders and letter writing practice. Then pop it in the washing machine on a cold wash. A bit educational, it is a great thing to take on hols, or places where the kids need entertaining.

Kept them quiet for nearly an hour while we had lunch!

ooh I love the look of that playmat, and all age children playing together peacefully!

Thought of two more successful gifts for the "grown up" 5 year old:

1. A Snuggle sac sleeping bag for "sleepovers", car journeys, movie nights or just piling special cuddly toys in. £45 from GLTC (but you can always get 15% + online discounts) http://www.gltc.co.uk/duvet-covers-bedd ... oCG3Tw_wcB

2. A "V-tech Kidizoom" camera in blue or pink with photo and video functions. Our son was given this for his 6th birthday and it has proved to be hours of entertainment, animating photos, capturing memories of days out and now creating little videos of Lego model stories. It has a few games in it too which are handy on long car journeys but not too addictive so far. Reduced on Boots website to £37.99 at the moment:

Exactly, cousins aged 3 to 10 years, all absorbed - meant the grown ups could actually have a conversation - result!
