Bereavement counsellor recommendation

Postby gail0810 » Fri Sep 23, 2016 3:05 pm

Hi

Can anyone recommend a good bereavement counsellor? My sister died almost 10 months ago after a six year battle with cancer. I have never talked to anyone about this and although I feel I am doing well, I have times where I don't feel I am coping so well and think I could do with some professional help. I am booked in to see my GP soon about this but happy for any recommendations.

Many Thanks

I found the Loss Foundation very helpful and supportive. They run monthly support groups (one in South London) for people who've lost loved ones to cancer, as well as various other types of event and support options.

I am very sorry to hear about your loss. There is an excellent (and free) bereavement counselling service available to all Wandsworth residents based on Lavender Hill. They offer 1 to 1 sessions with experienced counsellors. www.wandsworthbereavement.org.uk
02072233178. I suggest you contact them. Best wishes.

PS I just checked their website and their services may be free or they may charge low fees dependent on ability to pay. They are an independent charity.

When my father died, I tried the Wandsworth Bereavement Service. There was a long wait list but I was eventually called. Unfortunately, by the time I got an appointment, I couldn't fit sessions into my schedule because I had just given birth. So I can't comment on their service.

While waiting for Wandsworth, my friend pointed me to a Bereavement course. Although it's not 1on1, it still helped me a lot. It's run by a church group but it is not religious at all. It's definitely worth it plus each session has a free dinner.

You might want to try Cruse http://www.cruse.org.uk/ another charity that offers counselling (either over the phone or face-to-face).

Grief counselling is something most qualified Counsellors can work with though so you can just search for one locally through the BACP website:
www.itsgoodtotalk.or.uk
Also try UKCP or Counselling Directory if no one appeals to you on there.
It might cost a bit more than a charity but you can choose a time/location to suit you and also have more of a choice of therapists.

Definitely give it a go though as it can be really helpful.

Please PM me if you want any more info. I am a Counsellor and know quite a few great people working in the NV area.

Hi, coping with bereavement can be really difficult. I am a counsellor/psychotherapist working in Clapham and I have both personal and professional experience of bereavement. If you would like to find out more, my website is http://www.therapybenefits.co.uk
I hope that you find the help that you need.
