A sad start to Black History Month

Postby chorister » Sun Oct 04, 2020 10:45 am

Last night St Luke’s Music Society held its first live concert in the 2020/21 season.  It took an enormous effort by the volunteers who run the Society, and compromises by the audience, who were clearly thrilled by the piano recital by Tchaikovsky International Piano Competition winner Barry Douglas.

Shortly after the start of the concert a young black woman with her son aged about 7 came into the church to see what was going on.  Her son was studying the piano, and although she was not wearing a mask (though everyone else in the audience was: it was a condition of entry) because she had just popped in out of curiosity, and had not bought a ticket they were nevertheless made welcome and a steward found them seats.

At the end she said how much she and her son had enjoyed the performance.  However, when she was asked to provide her name and phone number for contact tracing purposes she refused.  She was shown a list of everyone who had attended the concert who – again as a condition of entry – had provided their details, and then in front of several people refused again and said that it made her feel uneasy and that she felt she was only being asked because she was black.  She produced what she said was a press pass, which she appeared to think made her exempt.

Perhaps she has a back story of living under some brutal regime where providing contact details is a real risk.  But actually it seemed like a very dispiriting start to a month that should be about exploring understanding and reconciliation.  It would be good to think that on reflection she feels ashamed of how she responded to people being kind and welcoming.  Conforming to the contact tracing regulations is essential for live music to continue.

Do you even fully understand what Black History Month stands for? I can totally understand why the poor woman was uneasy and worried about giving her details considering you just plastered the whole story on a public forum, even implying because she is black she most likely has a story of living under a brutal regime. I totally agree re the need to collect details but maybe that should have been mentioned to her AT THE START, together with the offer of a disposable mask.
Black History Month is about recognising the contribution of Black and Brown people to our country history. Not a personal exploration of understanding and reconciliation (with what? colonisation and the atrocity the British Empire is responsible for?).

Honestly, I don't know where to start.

If she had bought a ticket she would have (a) had to provide contact details as the booking process would not have completed without it and (b) been alerted to needing to wear a mask.  What actually happened was she didn't book and was nevertheless welcomed and accommodated, even without a mask - and then when asked to comply with contact tracing, refused.  That refusal has nothing at all to do with colour.  But was does is the offensive reason she gave for not doing so, stereotyping the people who asked as racist.

And there's no implication that she lived under a brutal regime because she was black - all sorts of people, of every colour, sadly live under brutal regimes - ask the Rohingya, for example.  But is she had, then it might explain a reluctance to provide contact details.

What on earth has this little story got to do with Black History month?!?!

Was the concert in aid of Black History Month?? Or is it simply because the story involves a black person?

And now this thread involves the public shaming of that black person!

A sad start to the month indeed!

I’m fairly speechless at this post. As others have said, it shows complete ignorance about the purpose of Black History Month and there’s some sort of implication that this person, who happened to be black, should have towed the line because she was black and it’s Black History Month?! There’s also an air of superiority about this incident. The whole post makes me feel very uncomfortable.
