Fake QR codes on lamp post charging points

Postby Tweenmum » Tue Mar 18, 2025 10:20 am

Just wanted to warn people that when I went to charge my car this morning at the lamp post by the junction of leathwaite road / wakehurst road, I realised (too late) that the QR code took me to a fake but very convincing website to input your card details to charge.

I removed the sticker to reveal the genuine QR code beneath and have reported to the police. On my walk home I noticed the same had been done the charging point outside 129 leathwaite.

Previous attempts at the same type of fraud in this area have been much more apparent - in this instance the sticker is imperceptible to the eye, just a QR code over the genuine QR code. And the website it takes you to looks very realistic - it was when my car failed to start charging I realised there was an issue and on close inspection found the sticker.

The 101 call handler was going to request pcso’s to come out to look at the lamp post outside 129 leathwaite and hopefully they will check others in the area but definitely be vigilant when using lamp post charge points BTC!

Thank you for sharing.

This is not at all surprising.

I think QR codes as a link to payment sites will be dead in a year or two. It’s just far too easy to swap them out with fake ones and before you know it you’ve handed your payment details to scammers.

I never ever scan a code “in public” for this reason.

This also happened to me on Sisters Avenue. I've reported it to Shell and will be calling the police following my bank to cancel my card with the details submitted.

We found fake stickers in other roads around Northcote. Definitely it needs to be better advertised.
