Are you from Sweden? Know Stockholm?

Postby Devi » Mon Nov 30, 2009 1:36 pm

Heya! We are visiting Stockholm for 3 days in January and I am taking my 2 year old with me. Am a bit worried about the cold and what he and I can do in the winter. How should I outfit him for the outside? Any ideas? Coffee/lunch on me around Clapham Common! Hope to see you. Thanks

I'm not from Sweden but I have been to Stockholm a few times. First of all, it will be VERY cold so make sure you have lots of layers for your little one (and you). Alot of the attractions are designed for when the weather's a bit warmer (they have a whole open air museum), but the Astrid Lindgren museum http://www.junibacken.se/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; is indoors, and it's great for little ones. There will be lots of snow so find a local park and build a snowman!

NappyValleyNet has a very good friend who lives in Stockholm, so I will ask him.

We have visited him a number of times and I agree with the previous temperature comment - it is freezing but I will ask Martin for more details!

It is one of my favourite countries so I am very envious. If you want to get in the mood make sure you read the amazing thrillers in the Millenium trilogy. They are all set in Stockholm and are brilliant. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is the the first book...

Many thanks Yummymummy--the museum seems brilliant. We'll probably hole in there all 3 days! A--Will be great to hear what your friend Martin has to say. I am thinking of visiting a shop that stores skiing clothes for proper outfits. Won't forget the The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo! :lol:

Hello

Don't know Stockholm, but try http://www.mountainchild.co.uk" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; for top of the range cosy stuff for your wee one. I can highly recommend Columbia as a brand. Also http://www.littletrekkers.co.uk/shop/in ... 666db302e2" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; I'm thinking of getting these for my son as we're moving to the snow in Jan.

I was in Oslo in January once and it was -16C. Wrap up super super warm!!

Have fun.

Hi,
here is a short report from Sweden! Cold :-) ? Well, actually today it looks like any ordinary London gray day and it is yet no snow and crisp but not cold. Yes, it can get pretty cold so you should be prepared, but I am afraid there is no snow guarantee in January. I keep my fingers crossed for you though, because the city is much more beautiful dressed in white. We lived several years in London with small kids, and used similar winter clothing in London as here in Stockholm. But we were also many times very surprised how little Londoners put on their young ones. I suggest you save your money and do not buy expensive super thick clothing, and instead use the multi-layered approach. With three or even four layers you can stand very cold weather. Make sure you bring decent gloves and hat.

Regarding activities for a two-year-old, I guess a local playground is the best start. There are plenty of them in Stockholm, and you can probably get good directions from the hotel. The museum "Junibacken" is great too, especially if your child has some experience of her stories, but it is worthwhile visiting anyhow. It is based on "Djurgården", a beautiful Island in central Stockholm, where it is a nice place for walks too. Another place not far from that Museum is "Skansen", the local Zoo. It is more than a Zoo, with quite a lot of cultural activities. Recommended, check it out at http://www.skansen.se/pages/?ID=221" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Hope you get a great trip to Sweden!
Best wishes
Martin

Thanks so much Martin--this is very useful information. Dressing in layers makes absolute sense to me after some years of braving NYC winters (much colder than London). Glad to know I should not have to buy clothes exclusively for this trip. I think my son will really enjoy the museum and the zoo. Looking forward to it all. Snow will certainly be a bonus! Thanks again ((: Devi
