Headteacher of the Year award for Dr Joe Spence at Dulwich College

Last Updated on : 3rd July 2024

At Friday 21 June’s Tes School Awards 2024 and attended by educators from across the UK, Dr Joe Spence, Master of Dulwich College, was awarded Independent Headteacher of the Year.

Now in their 16th year, these prestigious awards are dubbed the ‘Oscars of education’ and judged by a panel of experts from long-serving head teachers to heads of educational organisations; the judges selected winners for 23 categories.

Judge Julie Robinson said, “Dr Joe Spence has demonstrated an amazing social mission in his time at Dulwich College. He has widened access, built meaningful and effective partnerships locally, and he’s been really active in inclusion, having achieved a huge amount in a long tenure.”

Dr Joe Spence said, “The irony of the Independent Headteacher of the Year award is that it is a tribute to everyone in the Dulwich School community, rather than a personal award. Thank you.”

We are also particularly delighted that another Tes Schools Awards 2024 winner is London South East Academies Trust – their award is Trust Team of the Year (10 or more schools). E-ACT is a multi-academy trust responsible for 28 academies in England, one of which, in London South East, is our educational partner City Heights.  Dr Sam Parrett CBE, CEO at London South East Academies Trust said, “London South East Academies Trust works really hard to transform the lives of the children in our academies through the power of learning and we’re honoured to be the first to receive this award.”

Dulwich College is an academically selective school with a distinguished tradition of inspired teaching and genuine scholarship and an ethos of equity and respect.

Committed to nurturing a supportive community that encourages a sense of social responsibility and spiritual and personal development, pupils from a variety of backgrounds feel equally valued.

Dulwich College offers a significant number of Bursaries each year and warmly welcomes applications from boys who are intellectually curious and enthusiastic to stretch themselves to their limits.

Currently 214 pupils are in receipt of Bursaries, the majority for 75% or more of fees. Our aim is intellectual excellence irrespective of background or circumstance.
