“When our relationships are good then life is good”
Valentines now seems like a distant memory. It does however prompt us to bring our love relationships into sharp focus. A day when couples can respond in a number of different ways. Some of us feel the pressure to make it something special, the perfect date, whilst some of us consider it a commercial enterprise.
What I know having worked with many couples is it is not the grand big gesture that creates a good relationship. It really is about how we connect with each other and the quality of that connection. Wether you celebrated Valentines or not it is a good time to refocus on the small things you and your partner can do that strengthens your love relationship. The secret to all strong relationships is the ability to create a strong bond that enables us to handle all of lifestyle challenges.
At the Relationship Practice we support you through all aspects of life’s challenges. Communication, parenting issues, family dynamics, work challenges and the health of your teens and children. Our team of expert therapists have experience working with individuals, couples and families. We are able to support you individually with anxiety, peri and post natal support, low mood and stress. As a couple facing relationship issues, marriage, divorce, parenting and desire in long term relationships. Our team is highly experienced and dedicated.
But let’s get practical here are three very simple ways to bring more connection into your relationship. I call this your relationship scaffolding, simple ways to create relationship stability.
Fully Present Date Night – Its so easy to drift into an evening and simply go through the motions, same old same old. When we choose to be intentional about our time with our partner we can create a moment where it is easy to feel connected. Create your next date night—whether at home or out—to truly engage with one another. Put the distractions away, (yes the phone must go!) have a real conversation, by being curious and listen carefully and you will create an experience that fosters connection. Even a simple dinner can feel special when you’re fully present.
Try Something New Together – Want the love to ratchet up a notch? Research shows that when we do something totally new together, it amplifies relationship satisfaction. So get creative! Take a cooking class, explore a new restaurant, or even try a yoga or ballroom dancing class together. Novelty keeps the spark alive.
Tiny Moments, Big Impact – real intimacy is created in everyday interactions. Take 60 seconds to tell your partner something you love about them, or stop what you are doing and give your %100 attention when they reach out for connection. A warm touch, a heartfelt compliment, or a moment of laughter together means more than any grand romantic gesture.
