As we get further stuck into autumn and gloom accretes like fluff in life’s lint catcher it already feels like the warmth and sunshine of mid-September belong to another world. Yet one gilded Friday night saw me, and a friend swap the outside of a pub for the inside of one Soho’s best known Sushi restaurants.
Situated towards the Regent Street end of Brewer Street, Kulu Kulu opened, and I’m thinking was last decorated in 1995. The interior is basic beige for which the term no frills could have been coined, with most of the seating placed around the sushi conveying conveyor belt, around which most of the menu circulates. Pricing is simple with 5 different plate patterns varying in cost from about £3.50 to £5.20, with specials and tempuras individually priced.
That evening sushi was proving to be popular, with all the seats filled and a small queue protruding out of the door. Taking a chance on this moving quickly we joined and refreshed ourselves by ordering a beer each to queue with.
Turnover was fast and we were seated with still half of our respective beers left, and I immediately ploughed in, removing a small plate of California rolls from the conveyor belt. This first dish set the scene for the rest of the evening, nicely sized, fresh tasting and reasonably priced. I am actually surprised at how reasonable the food remains.
I had the same feeling with the salmon sashimi, tuna sushi and a special dish of tempura softshell crab, which for me though the most expensive dish of the evening was also the standout dish of the evening. Having made our way through 6 dishes a piece, in only about 40 minutes, we called for the bill. At about £75 including the earlier beers for a high quality if quick dinner for two, struck me as very reasonable.
Kulu Kulu is one of those rare places, it has zero pretensions, no obsequious staff trying to upsell you, is in a great location, but is still worth making a detour to visit and somewhere I have never had a bad meal. Nothing else I can say, you’re in the West End, want sushi, go here.
