Muggles unite in celebration of all things Harry Potter

Last Updated on : 14th February 2022

Hornsby House or Hogwarts? You would be forgiven for being unsure if you were to set foot on the school grounds on Friday 11th February. Hornsby House School in Balham underwent a temporary ‘transfiguration’ from prestigious London prep school into a fantastical recreation of Hogwarts. Pupils and staff donned their Harry Potter costumes for this term’s House Day in honour of the 25th anniversary of the publication of J K Rowling’s Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone.

To give pupils (or should we say, ‘muggles’) an insight into life as a trainee wizard, there was a delightful array of activities on offer. These included a breathtaking owl display provided by Hawkeye Falconry, Quidditch practice in the school playground and a Harry Potter trivia quiz to challenge their knowledge of the book. The art department also led a session on creating pictures of magical, mythical creatures, while Dumbledore (aka, Headmaster Mr Rees) conducted a special Sorting Hat assembly.

House Day celebrates the start of half term and the normal timetable is suspended in favour of pupils gathering in school Houses with peers, siblings and children of all ages for a day of themed activities. Houses and House Days strengthen the strong sense of community at Hornsby House just like the houses do at Hogwarts!

Hornsby House Headmaster Mr Edward Rees said:
“What a truly magical way to finish our half term on a high. Our House Days bring the school community together in a spirit of celebration and fun. It’s what makes us all so proud to be part of the Hornsby family!”
