Transforming a Cluttered Teen Desk/Studio into a Creative Haven

Last Updated on : 10th October 2024

At Another Approach, we love helping families and individuals regain control of their spaces, and recently we had the pleasure of transforming a chaotic teenage desk into an organised, inspiring studio for a talented student preparing for her GCSE Art exam. This young student needed a functional, inspiring space to study and create, but the disarray of supplies, schoolwork, and personal items was making it hard to focus.

1) Decluttering the Essentials: We began by sorting through the art supplies, books, and personal items. The student participated in the process, deciding what materials she truly needed and what could be stored away or discarded. We categorised her art supplies—paints, pencils, brushes, craft—making it easier for her to access what she needed without causing more clutter.

2) Personalised Storage Solutions: To help keep the space organised in the long term, we introduced storage solutions that matched her needs and style. We used clear, labeled containers for different art materials and separate bins for school supplies. A peg board was added to ensure that frequently used items, like feltpens, sewing thread were easily accessible. This not only saved time but also reduced stress by creating an intuitive system.

3) Creating a Clear Desk: This helped her to mentally switch between academic tasks and creative time without the two activities overlapping or causing clutter.

4) Displaying Finished Work: To honour the student’s hard work and give her space to appreciate her progress, we installed a gallery wall to display her favourite completed projects. This gave her a sense of pride and accomplishment, while also freeing up space from piles of finished work.

5) Adding Personal Touches: To make the space feel uniquely hers, we added personal elements.

Tips for Families Looking to Organise a Child’s Space

If you’re a parent dealing with a similar situation, here are some tools and tips to help transform your child’s cluttered desk or studio into an organised, inspiring space:

  • Declutter Together: Involve your child in the process of decluttering. This not only gives them a sense of ownership over the space but also helps them understand what they truly need and what is just taking up space.
  • Use Clear Storage Solutions: Transparent bins and drawers make it easy to see what’s inside without creating a mess. Labeling each container helps keep supplies organised and easy to find.
  • Designate Zones for Different Activities: If the desk needs to serve multiple purposes—like studying and creative projects—set up clear zones for each. This helps maintain organisation and creates a clear mental shift between tasks.
  • Display Accomplishments: If your child has completed artwork or other projects, dedicate a wall or shelf to display them. This not only helps clear clutter but also boosts their confidence.
  • Encourage Regular Clean-Ups: Set aside time every month/season for a quick tidy-up session. This prevents clutter from building up again and keeps the space functional and inspiring.
